Owner description: COME & SEE LAVA UP CLOSE & PERSONAL WITH EXPERIENCED HAWAII VOLCANOLOGIST! Aloha! Mahalo for choosing ‘Ahiu Hawaii for your REAL LAVA ADVENTURE!! We have two different tour times. One at 8:00am and the other at 4:00pm. The price is $155 per person, which we provide a backpack, snacks, water, headlamps, backup headlamps, gloves and also a stick to walk with but also to interact with the lava! Private tours are $195 which you decide what time you want to check in and how you would like to go about your tour. We hope you care about your safety. Cause Your safety is our #1 priority! Our tour groups are small which we never book no more than 10people per tour guide for safety and personalism. Plus all of our guides are REAL geologist/volcanologist and biologist who REALLY know what's going on about the lava and will safely get you there! The hike out is approximately an 1hr and a half. Then you'll have an hour of viewing, then the same time to walk out. So approximately 4hrs.

“Ahiu Lava Tour Will Exceed All Expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013

The other reviews do a great job of describing the amazing aspects of Ahiu Lava Tours; how well they prepare you for the hike; the equipment, food and water they provide for you; the expert guides (Derek is a geologist as well as Joe, and doled out a constant supply of wonderful information about lava, the island, the history); the live lava flows you can stand a few feet away from and poke with a stick; the night views of the lava flowing down to the ocean; and the expert medical care they provide for the cuts and scrapes that occurred along the way for a few in our group. I really can't say enough positives about the experience. I have been to 4 of the Islands now and done plenty of activities from helicopter rides to snorkeling with sea turtles near Kona on the big island to ATVing through the lush/muddy "Jurassic Park" valley on Kauai to big surf on the North Shore of Oahu to sunrises at Maui's Haleakala Crater, and I have to say the Ahiu Lava Tour sticks out as a high point of them all. If you can handle a few hours of not-particularly-rigorous hiking over somewhat uneven terrain, you owe it to yourself to take this tour. I would go so far as to say, if you're visiting the Big Island and you have only a couple of hundred dollars to spend on one activity, this is where you should spend your money.

“Awesome Lava Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

The tour starts out on the edge of the Lava field and the tour guide explains the Volcano science and history of this Volcano. Very good intro, includes a good explanation of the tour route and what we'll see and the safety precautions. Amazing trek across the lava field. Lava flow area has incredible formations. The tour guide is a graduate geologist and very very knowledgeable. The guide took us on a route to see actual flowing lava. When we got to the ocean entry, lava was flowing into the ocean and it was just an amazing spectacle of hot lava and steam and heat.
It was an amazing tour, you have to do this tour!

“Ahiu Lava Tour "The Best"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

An experience of a lifetime!! Our words don't convey how we feel.. The employees in the store (especially Orion) were very friendly, knowledgeable and courteous to everyone. They explained in detail what the tour would entail. There were 6 of us scheduled to go on the tour which made it a more personal experience. They supplied us with back packs, bottled water, snacks, walking sticks, gloves and head lamps (for the trip back in the night). Definitely bring your digital and video camera's and wear hiking shoes(supportive).
Joe who is a geologist, was our tour guide, that made it a "true experience"!(Thank you Joe for a Lifetime experience.) He explained so much of the culture and history with the lava flows, the different layers of the lava, the top layer being glittery like glass(which by the way cuts the same if you're not careful). We got within inches of the flowing lava(you could feel the heat), even got to touch the lava with our walking sticks. We started in the afternoon into the evening, got to see the sunset and the lava at night (what a breathtaking experience). Seeing the glow from a distance was nice, but being at the actual lava flow was Amazing. Hearing the crackling of the lava and the lava flowing into the ocean made some Awesome colors for picture taking. We would definitely do this trip again because of the knowledge and service that Ahiu Hawaii provided to us and would definitely recommend them to everyone.
Thank you again Joe and Orion for the Experience of a Lifetime!!!

“Our favorite thing we did on our Hawaiian vacation.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2013

What a fantastic tour! This was absolutely the best thing we did in Hawaii (including Road to Hana, Whale watching tour, Hawaii Volcano national park, etc.). The best part was having a geologist as one of our guides (Joe). There we other tours there once we got to the flow site (all three tours I debated booking with), but by far we were able to go more places and see more things because Joe was on the tour. We absolutely made the right decision by going with Ahiu lava tours. We met at their headquarters in Hilo and picked out a stick and got a backpack full of snacks, a very large bottle of water, and a headlamp. I had brought my own hiking backpack and they let me unpack their pack and put everything in my own pack. We then climbed in our car for the caravan to the parking area. When we arrived we began the 2-3 mile hike across the hardened lava to the current flow. Once there we had ample time to poke our sticks in the lava (many times I might add), watch the lava flow into the ocean, watch the sunset, and just enjoy the earth being made around us before the headlamp lite hike back to the cars. All three guides on the tour were very helpful and professional and made sure everyone was safe and was having a great experience. It was a truly unforgettable experience and one I can not recommend highly enough. Always check were the lava is currently flowing when your Big Island trip is nearing. If the lava is flowing on private land (as it was when we arrived) or if you feel more comfortable having professionals with you, definitely do this tour. You won't regret it.

“Experience of Lifetime!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

Highly recommend this Lava Tour to all. It was the highlight of our trip to Hawaii Islands. Our guides Derek & Larry were fantastic. A truly wonderful experience and once in a lifetime adventure! They supplied food, water, stick for poking the lava flows and lighting on fire, headlights for the night walk back... so amazing and so much fun! Take very good walking shoes (you will get hot soles), light jacket for night-time but it's still very warm, long trousers in case you stumble, the old lava ground is hard and jagged, also a good camera, the photos will be incredible! Met at their office in city of Hilo, Big Island Hawaii, then drove in our own cars to the lava parking area. Anyone visiting Hawaii, this is the tour to do!!! Mahalo & Aloha, Caron.
