The other reviews do a great job of describing the amazing aspects of Ahiu Lava Tours; how well they prepare you for the hike; the equipment, food and water they provide for you; the expert guides (Derek is a geologist as well as Joe, and doled out a constant supply of wonderful information about lava, the island, the history); the live lava flows you can stand a few feet away from and poke with a stick; the night views of the lava flowing down to the ocean; and the expert medical care they provide for the cuts and scrapes that occurred along the way for a few in our group. I really can't say enough positives about the experience. I have been to 4 of the Islands now and done plenty of activities from helicopter rides to snorkeling with sea turtles near Kona on the big island to ATVing through the lush/muddy "Jurassic Park" valley on Kauai to big surf on the North Shore of Oahu to sunrises at Maui's Haleakala Crater, and I have to say the Ahiu Lava Tour sticks out as a high point of them all. If you can handle a few hours of not-particularly-rigorous hiking over somewhat uneven terrain, you owe it to yourself to take this tour. I would go so far as to say, if you're visiting the Big Island and you have only a couple of hundred dollars to spend on one activity, this is where you should spend your money.
