“Quick stop, nothing too impressive ”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2014

I have seen many water falls before. This one is one of the longest falls. Worth a quick stop. Nothing really too special. We didn't go around the loop. Just saw the fall over the lookout. 5 mins walk from the parking lot and you can see the fall. Can't get close enough for any nice photos.

“Nice, but crowded”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2014

We were here in 1992, and the falls were just a trickle. I was back in March 2014, and it was a nice and impressive waterfall, due to the rain we had in the past few days. The loop walk is quite nice as well, offering a couple of viewing points to the Akaka Falls, and over the valley. Lush tropical vegetation makes it a beautiful little walk. The downside was that the area is way overcrowded. The parking space is tiny, and cars circle around it to get a spot of someone who is just leaving, and others park along the access road. Parking and park access is being charged right there (I think it was $10). The narrow'ish trail and stairs are full of people, especially when tour buses arrive. While the view on the falls is nice, it is not a great experience due to parking and crowding.

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2014

Breath taking! A must to see! There is a parking fee of $5 or $1 per person if you park outside of the lot. The lot is small, but there is parking close. The little town before the falls is nice for wood items and shaved ice.

If you are going to Hilo after the falls, drive the Heritage Drive back and get the best smoothie at What's Shakin. They grow all of their fruit for the smoothies.

“Nice view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2014

It's okay but there are better waterfalls to view. If your driving around the island it's worth a stop but don't go out of your way. Park outside (on the road) the small parking lot or pay $5 if there's space.

“Nice but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014

We paid the $5/parking and $1/per person to see the falls and took the shorter path. The walk was nice, well manicured. Along the way the foliage and fauna were gorgeous.. Once arriving at the falls they are a fair distance away. They are nice but not spectacular. We live in Oregon and in comparison I feel ours are much nicer. Therefore I felt for us it was a bit of a waste. However, if this is not something you have at home and have easy access to then you would certainly enjoy the walk and seeing the falls. I just wish they got you a bit closer to the falls.
