“Short walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014

It was a breathtaking walk of to the falls and around the park (it makes a loop). Don't get your hopes up that it is a huge waterfall, it is, however you really can't get that close to it. You are actually looking down into the falls from above. Wear good traction shoes because around the park walkways was a wee bit slippery. The whole excursion took us about 1 hour.

“gorgeous,”

not too touristed like rainbow falls. You can't get too close but it's a beautiful view and the walkway through the rainforest is gorgeous too.

“One more interesting waterfall in Hilo, big island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014

There are many interesting beaches and waterfalls on the Big Island. Hilo is the wetter of the two main towns on this island, and once you are here, and have seen the town itself, the Rainbow Waterfall (rainbow may be only visible if you are lucky and visit this fall at the right time of the day) and Akaka Falls about 20-30 minutes north of the town. The main drive along the ocean on this side of the island all the way to Wiamea is much more lush and scenic than on the Kona side (which goes either along the ocean or on the hillside). The side road to Akaka Falls State Park has a sing, Hwy 220, which is a winding road that travels through a small town, small fields and ends at the park. You may park your car in the paved area, pay $5 per car, or as many people do, is to park along the road side, walk a short distance, and pay $1 per person to enter the trail. We did the later. You should follow the trail starting on your right, which will lead you first to the smaller Kahuna fall, but the Akaka Fall is the main attraction, and is 422 ft straight drop into a pool. The trail has many flowering bushes and trees, smaller streams and beautiful views. It's worth walking slowly to soak in all the natural beauty and surroundings. Admire the fall, take some photos and walk back to the car park. Also, use the facilities before you start driving back since they are not easily found for the next 1-2 hours driving north. On return drive, we also stopped to purchase fresh coconut water and fresh sugarcane pieces from a local farmer whose shed is located just a few minutes back from the fall.

“Don't believe the reviews!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014 via mobile

Yes, the Falls are gorgeous. No, the .4 mile circuit is not a "stroll", not "easy" either. It is 45 minutes of steps, up and down, and ramps, up and down. Very little is flat. My calves and quads (top of thighs) were screaming when I left, even though I am an aqua aerobics teacher. The signage stinks, so study the display at the entrance. The short walk is to the left. The smaller falls that is on the "circle" route is not impressive. The exit back to the parking lot is not marked at all, so good luck. If you miss it, you just keep going around the circle.
My advice: Take water. Read the display map. Pay your $5 so the State can maintain the Park. Take the short route to the left if you have bad knees or any concern about 45 minutes of stairs.
Between the Falls and Hilo is the absolutely gorgeous, wonderful HawaiiTropical Botanical Garden, which, among other things includes a beautiful waterfall. It is more expensive, and the pretty easy walking takes at least an hour, depending how long you want to savor the beauty of the plants and the view of the gorge and the ocean. Far less demanding, and much more rewarding.
