“Haven in Hilo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2012

We arrived in Hilo quite late. A taxi brought us the short distance to the hotel. Yes, it is quite old, but we thought very well kept. The room was spacious and cool. If there were noises from other rooms we were too tired to hear them. The bed was clean and comfortable. The staff were kind and helpful. Breakfast the next morning was more than adequate. There are flowers throughout the hotel. The pool looked inviting but we hadn't time to enjoy it. Staying on the Hilo side of the Big Island is a much more Hawaiin experience than you are going to get on the Kona side.

Room Tip: A room on the pond side seemed to be quieter.

Just okay. We stayed here one night, the staff here is very nice. Since there isn't too many choices to stay in Hilo this was basically our only option.
The rooms are old and the walls are very thin. You could hear your neighbors talking, watching t.v., etc. So a good night sleep is not going to happen.

There is a restaurant in the hotel which is pretty good.

The only thing nearby is a park across the street.
Close to airport

Room Tip: Away from the street

There are not many hotels in the Hilo area - unlike Kona - but there are many things to see and o on this side of the island, so your options are limited to a hotel along the Banyan Drive area, renting a vacation home or bed and breakfast, or if you have military privileges, staying in the Volcano area.

We stayed at the Hilo Seaside - related to the Kona Seaside. The staff was friendly, especially helping with the kamaaina (or Hawaii resident) rates. They were very accommodating with a handicap room (ground floor) with parking close by.

Overall the room is clean - but the bed was not too comfortable, A/C unit small (I think the BTU's was too low for the size of the room), TV channels limited (no HBO or frills). It's not a fancy place but decently clean. There are 2 iMac's in the lobby (15 minute max; must leave your ID with the front desk), laundry facilities, and a small pool. The location is great - 5 minutes from Hilo Airport - and the hotel is very easy to find, located right on the main drive.

Not anything like a Hilton or Marriott, but it's good enough for short trips and if you're not staying in the hotel all day long.

It was surprisingly clean based on first impressions. Very dated in the rooms. Really tight parking also.

We were only here for one night but it made a big impression!
Pros:
Beautifully landscaped. The gardens surround and run through the whole place. Must see it to appreciate it.
Clean and comfortable. The rooms were older but they were in good condition. Everything is well maintained.
Breakfast was great. Good service, good food, included in the price, what more could you want.

Cons:
Lots of stairs. It can be a little clumsy moving your wheeled luggage around. Adds to the charm but could rub some people the wrong way.
Bugs. There were some non-biting, not gross at all bugs that shared our room with us. Not a big deal but the one in the coffee maker was a little much...

Room Tip: Ask for something with a view of the pond!

Hotel is correct for a one night stay. Hotel interior looks older than exterior but the room was clean. Nice garden nearby and some food options in walking distance.

This is great local style hotel. Old but up kept well. Nice, accomodating friendly staff. If you want luxury, go to Kona. Hilo is such a friendly, low key city. Friendly people, abundance of flowers and fruits. If you want to relax for a day or two, get away from the city, Hilo is the place. Hotel has a swimming pool but did not use it. If you are arriving late, call the hotel so they will hold your chosen room. Otherwise they may assign it away. Room was clean, free coffee in the rooms. Small restaurant in the lobby, but did not eat there. Had meals at Ken's Pancake House close to the hotel. You will need a car in Hilo, need to drive to pretty much everywhere.
