“Loved the open-air lobby”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2011

As others have written, this is not the 5 star Hawaii resort experience, but it is a very good value for money kind of place. If you can get a room overlooking the bay (vs. one facing into the back parking lot) it's a fabulous view, well worth the price. Room includes a free breakfast at Coconut Restaurant, in same building, but a separate business. Run by a local Hawaiian family, it has a lot of old-world (i.e., not glitzy corporate run) hotel establishment going for it. Free wifi in lobby (but a fee in the rooms - our only complaint). Using internet in lobby gives you a chance to enjoy the open air lobby, with no windows at all on side facing fish pond - a nice feature to enjoy.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking bay/harbor are definitely worth the slight extra price - otherwise, it's just...

Only spend one nite in the hotel but it was a very pleasant stay. I checked in early morning around 8am the staff was kind enough to give us our room as it was available. Room was big enough for my family and it was a great stay and experience. Have called in for a late check out as we had flat tire they were very happy to do that for us. I will always stay at this hotel when I get a chance to visit Hilo.

Room Tip: Suite and Deluxe are more roomy.

Loved this place. Wonderful staff, clean rooms, lovely gardens. Very classic Hawaiian. A full breakfast is included in your room rate.

We stayed here for one night while visiting the volcanoes....trust me we stayed at worst in Maui....which was much higher rated....this hotel is older, but the rooms were clean and we were able to sleep well and shower.....and head off the next morning to explore the Hilo side before heading back to Kona.... I was very nervous about his hotel after reading the reviews and really it was just fine....unless you plan on hanging out at the property.....the front desk lady was very friendly and efficient....I would recommend.

First, the name of the hotel is not true. They're not on the seaside--they're on a small, not-very-attractive lagoon looking at a cheap restaurant. Most of the rooms are motel-style, so the door and only window opens to the walkway with everyone walking by. The window only has slats, so you can never really shut it, so you have to keep the drapes drawn almost continually giving the room a cave-like feel. Welcome to Hawaii and your dark, old, style-free room. They put the one-square-foot minifridge on a shelf in the closet, so I hope you don't need to hang anything up (on the wet side of the island--good luck with that.) The parking lot is WAY too small for the number of rooms. I knew I should have stayed in the newly remodeled rooms at the Naniloa.

Room Tip: If you have to stay here get a room on an upper floor facing the ocean. Of course for the price of...

This hotel has a lovely location and view, dated, but adequate interior and friendly staff. Due to the pleasant temperatures (we were here in October), we had our windows open at all times and never used the AC. We loved the frog choruses at night! The biggest downside to this hotel is the fact that smokers are out on their balconies smoking and the smoke comes straight through the windows into the rooms. There is no getting away from it.

We asked the people at the desk about the smoking policy a number of times and were told that Hawaii law states that smokers may not smoke within 20 feet of the building. If you complain to the desk, they will call the room of the smokers, if you actually saw them smoking. However, there are ashtrays and matches in the rooms and several of the smokers said they had been told at the desk that it was OK to smoke in the (open) hallways and balconies. So, we asked again and were told that what smokers do in their rooms out of sight is their own business and there was nothing they could do about it. We were on the top floor and were constantly smelling smoke, which is a real shame, with the clean air that one should be breathing within view of the ocean! Otherwise, the hotel is fine (though very basic), but I would not go back until they have a firm smoking policy in place and inform all their guests about it.

Everytime I come to this side of the isle this is the only place I will stay. The room is equipped with everything I need a mini fridge, coffeemaker, comfortable bed, tv and a restaurant adjoined to the lobby. The front desk clerks, housekeepers and groundsman are always friendly and pleasant. If I need extra towels, soap etc..etc..they quickly comply with my needs and wants. I recommend this hotel to everybody that asks.
