“Going downhill quickly”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

I reviewed this hotel last spring when we stayed to attend a swim meet. Our room on the 7th floor was nice and there were 2 of three elevators working at the time. We stayed again and paid for a end unit room at a higher price. We were put on the 3d floor which was disappointing as the view was much better the previous stay. It was fun when the Disney ship came around the point at 5:30 am the next morning. If I hadn't known it was arriving I would have missed the one high point of the stay. There was know comfortable chairs or couch in the room although there was enough room for it. The wrap around balcony was nice.

The public areas had gone downhill. Only one elevator was operating and that was slow!!!! The made walking up and down the stair to and from the 3d floor an advantage. However, the was chipped paint all over the stairwells as if they have never been cleaned. It is obvious this hotel is owned by a union where rules are the most important thing. At check in we were made to sign a form that promised we would not use drugs or give alcohol to minors. I believe these activities are illegal so way the form? The continental breakfast was dismal and a joke to have a sign on the food table warning guests not to go through the sign more than once.

This hotel filed for bankruptcy since our visit last spring. It is only going to get worse. Too bad... such a great location.

“What a dump”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

What a dump! We were moved twice before we found an acceptable room. The last room was in the "remodeled " section. I wonder which century that was. Should have gotten a clue when only 1 of 3 elevators was working. Neither the TV nor the air conditioning work in the first room. It's in a pretty location but needs serious help. The pool water did not look safe to go in. I just wanted a basic place to stay for one night. We usually stay at Motel 6 or Super 8 like places but those would make this look like the Ritz.

Room Tip: Go some where else.

“Glamour Shots...Flattering Photography!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

The professional pictures of this property does it a ton of unmerited favors! Front desk staff repeatedly apologized for being short staffed, and seemed to have more than one person could handle. Only one of the three elevators worked MOST of the time. The structure seems to be very old and it takes more than paint and bathroom tile to count a room as renovated. For the price per night this property should be in much better condition and fully staffed.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a "renovated" room...renovated was a generous word, so I cringe to think...

“Bring your rose-colored glasses”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

This hotel, from what I understand, has been in the midst of a renovation for a few years. It is obvious! However, if you are going to stay in Hilo (not many reason to stay in Hilo, unless you need to save money and/or going to the Volcanoes for more than one day) this is the hotel to stay. All other hotels are "local apartments" or very rundown. Our actual room was 2 double beds with a nice size balcony with beautiful view of the bay and Mauna Kea (this is considered "Oceanview") It was recently renovated with nice linens, dorm-style furniture, a beautiful bathroom, and nice artwork. The pool was nice, although no lounge chairs, just patio tables and chairs. Overall a decent place to stay for a night or two.

Room Tip: Choose "Oceanview" the view is awesome and worth the extra $20!

“Fine for a few nights.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Stayed here to be near volcano park. I was very worried after reading reviews. But it was fine. It's clearly not a fancy resort. But it comparable to a basic hotel (super 8 etc.) and it's in a great location. We had a partial harbor view which was great. The rooms are very basic but they are clean. You get a fridge, flat screen tv, updated bathroom, low end shampoo/conditioner, very old hair dryer, and coffee pot. Windows didn't open, the beds are old and so soft I was surprised we could walk the next day, and there is a sheet with no extra blankets in the room (I froze). The cheesiest part to me was continental breakfast. It was coffee, tea, white/wheat bread, and muffins. The smallest plates imaginable and a sigh that says "one trip only". Oh, and no wi-if in the rooms. They will give you a cable to get access in your room but for wifi you have to go to the lobby. The pool is tiny and we didn't see anyone use it. There are some beautiful areas to walk to in the area (park area along the coast). All and all, it's fine and we would probably stay again because it was clean. Just be prepared for something very basic. The elevators were a joke. Be patient. One went to whatever floor it wanted and the other 2 were unbelievable slow. And the hallways are all tile which means when people slam doors, IT iS LOUD! Another cheesy move: you can use a microwave in the lobby... For a dollar. Again, nothing fancy and certainly not a resort. Although the others nearby didn't look much better.
