“the good, the bad, and the ugly....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

the good: Great location for getting to downtown hilo, and to volcano national park...Check in was seemless...I got a room with a double bed and a sofa bed...Stay away from that sofa bed, it neither comfortable, ,and quite noisy..It should be thrown out of all the rooms. There isnt even a blanket near nor on the sofa bed, nor in the closet for the sofa beds....I was able to go back to the reception and change for 2 double beds. The receptionist downstairs was really helpful in changing the room for me..There is a laundry room available, and breakfast in the morning which was a nice touch...Rooms were clean, but the Aircon in the room was really really loud...Had nice hot water from the shower, and the rooms were cleaned every day...For $70 a night it wasnt bad...All i wanted was a clean room, and somewhere to lie my head...Rooms were cleaned every day, and the kitchenette was a nice touch...

the Bad: Parking wasnt great...Give or take 40 stalls..Not once was i able to park in the parking lot, everyday i was parked on the street..It seems around 6pm everyone is coming back from their sightseeing adventures...Parking was free in the parking lot if you could find it...

the Ugly: I hardly slept at nights....My balcony overlooked the garden..At nights you could here 100's of birds in the trees that were really really really loud...And along with a species of frog that was accidentally introduced into hawaii called a Coqui frog...The frogs croaked all night....so between the frogs, and the birds made for a sleepless night at times... Closing the sliding glass door, and the window shutters does no good...

Other than that, for the price its a reasonable place to stay.....

Room Tip: That garden view is really loud with the frogs and birds at night...Dont know if its possible, but t...

I always stay here out of habit. The Internet price is reasonable. It is away from the street being on the bay. But the frogs are VERY NOISY. The breakfast is ok for continental. The staff is very friendly.

I don't know what people are complaining about. If you want nice, resort style hotel then you shouldn't come to Hilo. All the resort style hotels are on kona side.

Uncle billy is slightly old but clean. We stayed one night and didn't spend much time in the hotel, since my main purpose is to see big island, not spend time in the hotel.

If you are like me who just want a affordable and comfortable bed after a long day of activities, then this hotel is for you. It also provide free breakfast and free wifi which is great value for $90. I can save some money and spend them on other activities such as the helicopter tour for the volcano.

Hilo is close to rainbow falls, zip line, Akaka falls and the helicopter for volcano departs from Hilo airport, so I definitely recommend people to spend at least one night at Hilo.

Uncle billy meets all my needs and I will come back when I visit big island again.

check in was at 3:00, we didn't get in the room until 4--and it was horrible. It is cheap and if you don't mind old and worn out, ceiling tiles open above, wasn't sure what was in the ceiling??? I would never stay there again.

This place is quirky and old, but in a charming kind of way. We liked it because it was inexpensive, friendly, and the only hotel in Hawaii that is Hawaiian family owned. The provided a simple breakfast, which is helpful. The location is great, walking distance to old town Hilo and the charming bay, Farmer's market, Coconut Island and the beautiful Queen Liliuokalani Gardens. If you aren't going to spend all day in your hotel and want to save money, like we do, Uncle Billy's is a very good choice.

We are currently on third of 4 days. I was pleasantly surprised with the room, since others said it was so bad. Our number one thing in a hotel is cleanliness, and it is clean. We reserved a garden view room and were given an ocean view corner room at the same price without even asking for an upgrade! The view is amazing. Perhaps you complainers should have stayed at the Hilton down the street at three times the price. And complaining about breakfast!? Come on people. It is free. Again, if you want something nicer, go down the street and spend twelve dollars or more per person. To sum it up, if you are here to sightsee like my husband and I, and not spend time sitting in a hotel, I suggest staying here and saving your money to see the many great things Hawaii has to offer.

stayed there a few time while we lived in Hawaii and the rooms are fairly dirty, the bathrooms are just basic, everything is old and worn out and not clean at all. the last time we stayed ( we went bar hoping) we got our key and went up and opened the door and what the ?? the room is occupied luggage all over and clothes, went back to reception and the acted like it was nothing, how can they be stupid enough to give us a key to a rented room??? wtf. We wewr happy to go home the next morning to escape the moldy smell. all in all its a cheap place to stay but if you can afford more i would advise to make other arrangements.

Room Tip: get a room on the top floor, locals love to bring there kids there and they run around and jump and...
