“Fantastic Sushi on the Big Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2008

My husband and I are vacationing on the Big Island. Tonight we had dinner in Hawi at a cute little restaurant called Sushi Rock. It was original sushi and was SOOO delicious. They use fresh caught local fish for the white fish and fresh ahi from here as well. They sold artwork to put money back into the community and served us beers from a Brewery in Hilo called Mehana. It's in downtown Hawi, the second green 2 story building on your left after you get into town. It is individually owned/operated by Rio Miceli and Peter Pomeranze. It is only open from 5-8 for dinner and has limited seating, Anita was a fabulous server, call for reservations.

We are staying at the Hilton Waikaloa Village and drove at sunset along the northwest coast highway up to Hawi, it was such a beautiful drive and wonderful end to our day. We watched the sun set all the way there (which is only about 25 minute drive) and had a great view of Maui's outline across the ocean.

Sushi Rock is a MUST if you are a sushi lover!!!

“Heaven in Hawi - Sushi Rocks - ROCKS”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2008

Wow...What a delightful experience. All of our culinary senses were awakened by each bite of the extremely flavorful and exotic Special Sushi rolls that were recommended by our young handsome host.

This is a mix of Sonoma (Wine country) meets Japanese Cusine. For a moment, we thought we were part of the fortunate panel on the The Iron Chef! So many different dishes with so many heightened flavors. The surroundings unpretentious and quaint. The service was immpecable.
(We went for an early lunch).

I would say Kenichi and Sansei could definetley learn something here...or perhaps...They want to keep Sushi Rock their best kept secret!

Aloha and enjoy!

“an incredible find in downtown hawi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2007

wow! we've been travelling to the big island for years and some friends told us about sushi rock in hawi town. we love sushi! and we were amazed by this place...the food is powerful, fresh, and innovative. more like asian/hawaiian/fusion sushi inspired stuff than traditional sushi. believe me, we tried alot of their offerings, and even had to go back 2 nights later for another shot at it! every dish was yummy and interesting. my (senior) parents loved it too, right down to the creative plating choices. service was warm and timely on both visits. we will definitely return on our next trip!

“Not Worth It!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2007

To begin, the service was terrible. There is always just one server, ours was rude and slow. He acted put out by simply having to wait on us. We had to get up & go to the bar to get refills on our drinks, there was only one other table in the restaurant. He actually yelled at my friend for asking for a substitution. We waited for the food for almost an hour & a half... no kidding! The food is susposed to be fresh & creative; we found it to be quite ordinary and unrealistically priced. one sushi roll can cost you $20.... and its so not worth it. My table of four, with no alcohol racked up a $100 bill for lunch and we left hungry. I was actually angry about my sushi rock experence when I left. It truely sucked!

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2006

Sushi Rock is in the little old town of Hawi which is just about on the northernmost tip of the Big Island.
This was our first experience of Sushi and the advice and resulting food was a wonderful experience. The large menu varies daily.
There is only room for approx 25 but the place was busy on both our visits. A very happy atmosphere.
The area around is beautiful, back into the lush countryside after driving through the desert and lava fields noth of Kona airport. Takes approx 1 hour from the airport. Drine noth on 19 and take a left at the first stop sign on to 270. Follow that for 19 miles into Hawi.
Worth spending a night at the rustic Kohala Inn to really enjoy the atmosphere and relax. The Kohala Inn is an old plantation in and is approx 100 yards away.
