5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2011

My husband and I visited the ranch in early Nov. 2010. We stayed at Yoshi's House. Wow! We wanted relaxation, and got that and more at Puakea Ranch.
- Beautifully appointed cottage with modern ammenities
- Colorful sunrises and sunsets at our private pool
- A resplendent private bath house
- Morning coffee on the lanai with Maui views
- Total privacy
- Afternoon reading in the hammock amidst ancient trees
- Swinging on a swing hung from an ancient tree amidst afternoon showers and not getting wet
- Star filled nights on the lanai
- Wonderful grounds with a pick your own organic veggie garden
We loved every tranquil moment!

I don't want to gush ridiculously about this place, but I can't help it. We had such an amazing stay, and if I could stay forever, I would. We stayed at the Miles Away Bungalow, and everything about our 3 nights/days there perfectly embodied relaxation. The bungalow is simply, yet gorgeously decorated. The views are unmatched. The amenities are top notch. Everything you might need in a kitchen is there. Everything is so comfortable. There's a Japanese Bath House that we could have lived in it was so amazing. And to be able to go collect your own eggs and fruit and veggies... what else could you ask for? Great location as well. Secluded and private, but with easy access to everything you would want to experience in Hawaii.

And last but not least, the resident dogs that keep you company, Lola and Zucca. The best part of the stay...

We visited Puakea Ranch during the week after Thanksgiving and stayed in "Miles Away" the medium-sized bungalow at the Ranch ("Yoshi's House" is much bigger and somewhat more expensive). What a refreshing change from the usual mega-resort! Although the Ranch seems quite isolated, it is only 20 mins from several of the most highly-rated beaches on the Big Island, and only 30 mins from the big resorts if you want to swim with the dolphins or go to a luau. There are several excellent restaurants (including the most awesome Kona coffee) in Hawi which is only five minutes away. If you want room service, this is the wrong place. If you are looking for a master-planned, goIf-centric Hilton or Marriott resort, this is the wrong place. But if you want luxury accommodations in a refreshing, relaxing environment, then this is the right place. Animals lovers will be in heaven here, with horses, dogs, goats, chickens and cows roaming the property. Want to go horseback riding? The horses come to your bungalow and hitch to your own hitching post! Want eggs for breakfast? Go get fresh eggs from the chicken coop! It feels like you are living on a farm but sleeping in a five-star condo! The bathhouse with Japanese tub was an especially luxurious touch, as was the private pool. If you MUST stay connected to the real world, the bungalows are all equipped with cable TV and wi-fi internet.

We usually stay at the expensive mega-resorts and we even stopped by the Hilton Waikaloa to take a look. We were very glad we chose Puakea Ranch and plan to go back again.

We chose this property based on the description and reviews, and with an extended family (of 5 adults) settled for Yoshi's House, which is truly a spacious, quaint gem!. Our expectations were high - and yet, this wonderful place still exceeded our expectations, it truly has to be experienced to be truly appreciated!. The property was easy to find, and arriving in the evening, the house was lit up and inviting. There are 3 sleeping places, one bed room with a queen, one with two double beds and a nook off the dining area (“sun room”) with a queen. The next day we could really take in the beauty and solitude of the property, with multiple places to spend/eat/swim outdoors. A constant, not too powerful a breeze, provided all the air-condition one would need. The animals, who were all friendly and fun to have around, and in some cases followed us up on the deck, were a bonus as we are all animal lovers. In short, we can confirm everything said in the description and by other reviewers, and we were as comfortable as can be in this house. There is excellent and fast Wi-FI reaching well into the yard (and Hammock!), a bath house that has to be experienced to be believed, and all the amenities one could wish for. We decided to get the daily cleaning, and were utterly impressed with the time the house keepers spend, and diligence they put into making everything in the house impeccable an d luxurious, and we can highly recommend this extra. We enjoyed Hawi and the quaint shops and eateries there, enjoyed visiting the ancient villages and ruins found close by in this area, and found that the added driving one has to do to get to the multiple sights around the Island was minor compared to living in Hilo or Kona, and was well worth getting “home” to a place every day that is so unique, so quaint and so beautiful. This was our 5th visit to the Big Island, and with it not being the last, we definitely found our "home" when coming back, no doubt what-so-ever that we will return to Puakea Ranch.

We have just returned from a Hawaiian vacation that included 3 nights in the Miles Away bungalow at Puakea Ranch, and it was the most unique place we have ever stayed. No expense has been spared on luxuries such as the bath house (which is almost as big as some apartments I've lived in) and the private pool, yet all of the rustic-ness (if that's a word) of ranch living surrounds you.

We would walk around the property each day to greet the horses, chickens, goats and of course the wonderful dogs (who made us miss our own), but we'd then retreat to the fantastic pool area, surf the internet with the included wi-fi, or pump music through the built-in bose stereo system. The contrasts were stark but all worked together for a memorable stay.

North Kohala where the ranch is located is a hidden gem (or a hidden gem within a hidden gem, since I think of the Big Island as a whole as a hidden gem as well). The neighboring towns of Hawi and Kapaau are only 5 minutes away and continue the contrast theme, with a very small population but with some of the best eateries on the island. We liked the sushi place in Hawi (whose name I have misplaced) and really wanted to try Bamboo but it is closed Sunday and Monday. Kapa'a Beach Park and Polulu Valley are also well-worth the short drive.

20 miles away (inland) is also the town of Waimea which had some great shopping and outstanding restaurants (Merrimans was great). And about 20 miles south are the big resorts and beaches of the Kohala coast.

We hope to go back to the Big Island again in the next couple of years, and will definitely be looking to go Miles Away once again.

I have wanted to stay at Puakea Ranch ever since I saw it featured in Cookie Magazine. As our kids are now 4 and 7 we decided that this was the right time - and it couldn't have been better! The stunning views, the wide open spaces to explore, the friendly animals, gorgeous Yoshi's house and the amazing Hawaiian hospitality were more than we had hoped for. My kids had a great time on the beautiful tree swing, playing with the many toys that were available to them, visiting the animals, making leis, horseback riding... there was so much to explore on the ranch. We also enjoyed the gorgeous beaches and hikes that are nearby. Claudia was super helpful the entire time and really made the visit to the ranch special. We hope to come back in the future!

What a wonderful experience! Stayed for about one week. The ranch is located in a beautiful area of North Kohala with views of the ocean. We stayed in James' Cottage. The house was beautifully decorated and had all the amenities: Flat screen TV, wireless internet, full kitchen, very luxurious bed and many windows that make it just perfect with a cool breeze!! The bathroom is located just steps away from the house and is amazing!!! Next to the house is a super relaxing and unique hot tub which you must try if staying at James' Cottage. The lady in charge Claudia was extremely friendly and gave us lots of advice on where the best places to eat and things to do in the area, not to mention she also took us horseback riding which I highly recommend. Overall if you are seeking a unique and relaxing vacation away from the tourists this IS the place! I am definitely planning a return and bringing friends!
