“It Doesn't Get any Better Than This”

We stumbled across this attraction while looking for things to do on our drive from Mt. Rushmore to Yellowstone in Sept. 2010. It added more than a hundred miles to the trip, but it was well worth it. The dinosaur collection is at least as good as the one at the Natural History Museum in NYC although the displays aren't as fancy for sure. As good as the display was, the pièce de résistance was the trip to the digs. What an education to stand in the middle of a dig and hear the story and see the bones still embedded in the rock.

The museum hours change after labor day and the tours stop for the winter after about the second or third week in September.

“Best kept secret in Wyoming”

We decided to stop and see this museum since it was on the way to our next stop. It's a little difficult to find, off the beaten path and doesn't look like much from the outside. But what a delightful surprise awaits. It took us about two hours to see the exhibits. I didn't realize that Wyoming had an area where they found dinosaur bones. Many of these are unique, some the only ones in North America. They have a number of excellent fossil specimens and everything is well documented. They have several nearly complete reconstructions of various dinosaurs. I'm not really an anthropologist expert or into science, but I enjoyed this museum

“Fantastic place for Dinosaur lovers big and small!”

We booked our son on a Kids Dig for the Day programme in July.
After checking in with the group leaders, the family was allowed free admission into the museum until the bus was ready to leave. Our son was soooo excited we could barely keep up with him as he raced from exhibit to another. The displays were excellent with lots of info boards that provided insight into all of the exhibits that was interesting to all ages.
The kids duly boarded their bus to go off to the dig site. Judging by Jimmy's remarks at the end of the day, the programme was a success. They spent the morning in the field looking for cool stuff (we had lots of rocks to declare at customs on the way back to NZ), had a subway lunch at a nearby park and then returned to the lab to use some of the equipment that the bigger paleontologists use and have a guided tour of the exhibits.
After the programme was finished we were allowed time in the museum again so he could show us around and tell us what he thought was interesting after their tour.
After the kids left we boarded our own bus for a tour of one of the dig sites (about 1 hr). This was very enjoyable too. It would be very cool to be able to take part in one of the adult dig programmes too.
The Wyoming Dinosaur Centre was certainly one of the highlights of our holiday to Wyoming.

“Outstanding experience with "Dig for a Day"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2010

I grew up in NYC with the Museum of Natural History at my doorstep, and the quality of this place blew me away. The museum itself is outstanding, but we upgraded to the Dig for a Day experience which wound up being one of the best parts of our 2 week trip. My daugther and I were paired up on a one-to-one basis with workers from the museum for a day-long experience for them to show us what it is like to be a real paleontologist. From 8-12 they took us out to one of their many active fossil dig sites where we got right down in there to help excavate a Camarasaurus skeleton. The staff with us was very friendly and explained the entire process. They even let my daughter help with the bone mapping and measurements. After that we had lunch provided and got to eat inside the musuem - right underneath the T-Rex skeleton. After lunch we got a guided tour of the entire museum - which was incredibile. Dan, our guide, knew the story behind every fossil and kept my daughter engaged with questions throughout. After that we got to work in the lab helping clean fossils with the air drills, dental picks and toothbrushes. We were sitting side by side with actual lab workers and got our names in the bone record as having worked on those bones. We ended the day with them taking us to a special hillside site chocked full of ancient sea fossils and they let us keep everything we could find and carry. This experience is expensive but if you are into dinosaurs and paleontology, this was an ultimate day getting tons of one-on-one attention.

“Superb destination for dino-lovers”

The Wyoming Dinosaur Center would be exceptional for the quality of the museum alone. It has superb specimens from around the world, and also from its own local dig site, including a full Superaurus skeleton and an archaeopteryx imprint. But his site offers more. For an additional fee, you can ride a bus out to the actual dig site and watch archaeologists at work digging up Camarosaurus bones and Allosaurus teeth. This is a great destination for all ages.
