Out of 14 hotels on our 3 week road trip, this was the most expensive and the least appealing. We were surprised at how dumpy this hotel was compared to other hotels on our trip that cost much less.
To begin with, our room was on the back side of the hotel, at the far end of the building from the front desk. We had to drive past a messy trash area and down a narrow alley around numerous construction vehicles to park by the back door of our room. There were workmen and bikers wandering around out back and I would not have felt safe staying there if traveling alone. In addition, the layout of the hotel was weird. Our room had a second door that led out to the common hallway and it was like being lost in a maze to find your way to the lobby, breakfast area or pool.
The hotel does get credit for having some newer furnishings. There were granite counters in the bathroom and bright white comforters on the bed. We could see that the beds and floors were clean. Unfortunately, there was no way to hide the poor condition of the structure itself. Our room looked worn with its shabby doors, peeling wallpaper, cracked light switch and goopy repairs. The room had a musty dusty smell.
One good thing about this hotel is the hot buffet style breakfast they serve, which included meat, eggs, fruit and waffles. It was served in the restaurant down the hall from the lobby.
Personally, if we were on another road trip through this area, we would skip Rawlins altogether and stop in Casper or Rock Springs. There is nothing ot do or see in Rawlins, the hotels and restaurants were surprisingly expensive and awful, and there was no Walmart or supermarket in town where we could shop for car snacks and such. Next time we will plan accordingly and stay somewhere else.
