Owner description: The Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site has an incredibly rich history. Run as a federal (territorial) and state prison from 1872 to 1903, it then became the Agricultural Experiment Station for the University of Wyoming after the State Prison relocated to Rawlins. The site is now operated as a Historic Site by the State of Wyoming.

“Look up this lock-up. It's great!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2012

For the $5 fee this place is fabulous. The wardens house and little church are gorgeously restored and have so much atmosphere. The penitentiary itself is excellent! We wandered for ages reading the biographies of inmates, including Butch Cassidy. Cells have been dug out of the muck where they've been since the prison closed in 1905 and somehow it feels like a jail again .... a clean, nice smelling jail, but that's ok. The relics are sensational .... original baths, urinals, massive stoves, beds complete with stunning quilts, clothing, pistols, manacles .... brilliant stuff!!
Great staff who gave us info then left us alone. Expect to enjoy a wonderful 2 or 3 hour trip back in time.

“Worth your time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2012

Step back in history. Butch Cassidy was a resident along with many other colorful characters. Volunteers at the broom factory were very informative.

“Wonderful history”

Spent a couple of hours touring the Wyoming Territorial Prison. Lots to see, and read, all very interesting and well preserved/restored. Easy wallk. One of the highlights of our trip to the Cheyenne area.

“GREAT history lesson”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

My husband and I love "living history". The Wyoming Territorial Prison was an excellent example of how it should be done. You could spend hours there! I learned many things about life in the territory and in the prison. The volunteer at the broom factory was a wealth of information. Well done!

“Wyoming Territorial Prison”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

This is a fairly small, but well restored prison. We enjoyed being given ID cards for some of the former prisoners, and looking for their photos and write-ups in the cell areas. My husband was assigned Butch Cassidy! Since we only had 1 1/2 hours until closing time, a visit to this small museum was an ideal choice.
