“Great Family Vacation!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012 via mobile

We stayed at GVRR this August for our annual family vacation. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure you are comfortable and having a good time. We stayed in one of the lodges that has 2 bedrooms with a great room in between. You walk into a mud room with a long bench and pegs to hang your coats plus there is a washer and dryer. In the great room, there is a full size refridgerator and mini kitchenette. Each of the three rooms have sliding glass doors out onto decks that have a fantastic view of the Grand Tetons. There are also hammocks to go hang out in as you watch the cattle and horses graze in the pasture. There are no televisions, just beautiful views and outdoor activities. You can choose to ride in the morning, afternoon or both on the horse they have reserved for you for the week. Or you can go down to the river or pond to fly fish, go into Jackson which is about a 25 minute drive, to whitewater raft or shop. Slide lake is 2 miles away with rocky and sandy beaches. I will warn you that the Internet on the ranch is practically non-existent and if you have Verizon for cell phone service, it does not work on the ranch. AT &T only works at the barn, so plan ahead. There is a hard wired computer you can use in the main lodge if needed. We would drive a little ways towards Kelly (@3 miles) to get cell phone service when we needed it. The food was varied and good with 2 cookouts. All three meals were provided and they would pack you a lunch if you went on an excursion during the day. If you are looking for a vacation where you can totally unplug and enjoy being outdoors, then I highly recommend this!

Our family (grandparents, three adult children and grandchild) just spent the most incredible week at Gros Ventre River Ranch! The location outside Jackson, WY is gorgeous. All cabins or lodges have an awe inspiring view of The Tetons. The owners, management, wranglers and staff couldn't have been any nicer. None of us had really ridden horses other than once or twice but by the end of the week, most of the family was going on the advanced rides. There was plenty to do even if you didn't want to ride like fly fishing, rafting, hiking, etc. One day we drove through The Teton Park to Old Faithful at Yellowstone Park. The food was so yummy that we couldn't wait for the dinner bell three times a day. They packed box lunches or breakfasts if you were on an all day ride or away from the ranch. The cookouts around the campfire were really special with wonderful entertainment--one night we had Cowboy songs and bawdy (just a bit) poems/stories about the West--while we were roasting marshmellows. We are from Miami so we loved the cool nights and NO humidity. There were 35 other guests while we were there---all of us became friends through the course of the week---there were couples, and families with teenagers---everybody became part of the Gros Ventre family. There is limited cell phone/computer service and no TV which we found to be liberating! We all hated going back to reality after our week at Gros Ventre which was capped off the last night with the Rodeo in Jackson!

Room Tip: We had one lodge which consisted of two huge bedroom/sitting rooms with en suite bath and enormous c...

my family of four plus my parents just returned from the gros ventre river ranch. it exceeded my expectations for a peaceful vacation that literally had time standing still. we were there for a week...it could have been a day, a week or a year. that is how wonderful of a time we had. usually i get antsy and want to head home but not this time. no tv, no phones, and very spotty internet and still my teenage boys managed to love it. we stayed in the lodges, slightly larger with their own washer and dryers. the accomodations are rustic, but clean. great views from every window. the food was good...not gourmet, but filling and never boring. as for activities, we biked, hiked, white water rafted(off site), fly fished and rode to our hearts content. the staff is unbelievably friendly, some of the nicest we have ever met. the horseback riding which was the highlight of my trip was sublime. the wranglers were wonderful...we never felt unsafe. we climbed and descended some of the steepest terrain without fear. the other guests were from all over the country, all different ages and multi-generational. by the end of the week, we all were fast friends....sharing cars, wine, and laughs. truly one of all time favorite vacations....ever!!

My husband and I traveled "west" for our honeymoon in September 2011. Our final destination was Gros Ventre River Ranch for 5 days. We had done a lot of research in where to stay at a guest ranch while we were out there and as we drove down the lane to the lodges, we knew we made a great choice! It was the most incredible place to stay and neither of us wanted to leave.

The staff is so friendly and welcoming and all of the lodges are so warm and inviting.
Our lodge, "Paintbrush", had a breathtaking view of the horse pasture with the Grand Tetons in the background. It was the most amazing view to wake up to every morning and was like a picture out of a magazine.

The food was outstanding and they have such a great selection. Dana, the head chef, would always accomodate any special requests, as well. They even made us a special 'honeymooners' cake.

The horse back riding was so much fun and the trails we rode provided some exquisite scenery and photo opportunities. It was a neat experience to see wildlife on the trails, too.
Guided fly fishing on Gros Ventre was much enjoyed and the guide was an excellent teacher and very patient. We managed to catch several beautiful trout!

The ranch is also in the perfect location in relation to many of the things to do and see such as Yellowstone (we took a day trip there and they provided us with a packed lunch!), Jackson Hole, and Moose, WY.

We highly reccommend the ranch to anyone who wants to experience a beautiful, relaxing and western adventure! We will hopefully have the chance to return Gros Ventre someday for an anniversary.

With much trepidation, I agreed to go to the Ranch. Wow, to my surprise our week was fantastic.
The management and staff were very pleasant. Quick to accomodate your needs and very informative. There was a good mixure of kids the ages of ours (13 and 20). The views were breathtaking, the food was excellent and always something to do, whether it be horseback riding, fly fishing, rafting on the Gros Ventre river or canoeing on their private lake. The lodging was clean and comfortable. Yellowstone and the Grand Teton national parks are within a short drive.
If you are looking for that "Waldon Pond" experience, this is as good as it gets.
The best part, reliable cell phone service was non-existent unless you drove about 10 miles to the entrance to the Grand Tetons in Moose, Wyoming. We saw all sorts of wild life from deer, elk, bison, pelicans, trout and even beaver. On a morning ride, our Wrangler spotted a bear and we immediately went in a different direction. I would highly recommend to get away, enjoy nature and experience Wyoming. What a great place. Kudos to Tori and Sean, as well as the all the staff. See you next year.

Room Tip: "Sleepem Restem" cabin has the best view as well as a washer/dryer, fireplace and full ki...

Friendly/genuine staff, great horseback riding, good food, comfortable and clean cabins, breathtaking views....the perfect balance of activity and relaxation!

We visited GVRR with our two children (ages 10 & 12) during mid-June. Based on the previous reviews of GVRR, our expectations were pretty high. We were pleased with the diverse age range of guests that were at the ranch during the week. There were several children (ages 8-16) as well as couples with no children, retirees, and extended families of adults/spouses, etc. It was wonderful meeting and talking to so many interesting people; there were opportunities to be social, but there were also opportunities to enjoy some solitude as well (the ranch and lodge are both spacious--lots of places to sit, read, hike, take photos, have a glass of wine, etc). Our kids had a great time exploring the ranch, being outdoors, meeting new friends, etc. They spent some time in the recreation room playing ping pong and board games, but they were outside most of the time having a blast! The cabins are "rustic" but clean and comfortable (we spent very little time indoors). Housekeeping tidied our room every morning and provided fresh towels/linens. They returned in the evening while we were dining to turn down the beds, turn on the heated blankets and our porch light. These were all nice touches that made you feel as though they are thinking about "the details". There was a nice variety of food offered throughout the week--fresh fruit and salads included in every meal. In talking to other guests who have visited many ranches, the food at GVRR is among the best where ranches are concerned. (One guest told me the last ranch he visited served a lot of pork, beans, mac'n'cheese. This is NOT the case at GVRR.) The wranglers were helpful (we are beginners), patient, friendly, and had a great sense of humor. They were great about pointing out wildlife during our rides (coyote, deer, marmot, otters, etc.). We never did the same trail twice, and we rode every day (some half day and some full day excursions)--we did not expect to enjoy the riding as much as we did! The kids all adored the wranglers and staff who are young, energetic and friendly. A few staff members even jumped into a soccer game that the kids were having one night on the main lawn. The staff and management at GVRR could not be more accommodating; they go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable in your cabins, on your horse, with your meals, etc. We were not looking for a 5 star spa/resort with tennis and pools (we can do that at the beach or in the Caribbean)....and we were not wanting to "camp and rough it" all week either. We wanted to be active during the day and to see Wyoming's gorgeous landscapes. We wanted to be comfortable at night and relax. GVRR exceeded our expectations....we didn't want our week to end!
