“Wyoming's History Worth Stopping For”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

Pros: Interesting histories of Wyoming, from dinosaurs to Native Americans to the Wild West. Quite large. Free of charge.

Cons: It could have used a better exhibit design as there was no real order to follow.

“Definitely a must-see!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2013

It's amazing that this museum is free! (Donations accepted.) If you are into museums and history, give yourself a good 2-3 hours to see it all. The exhibits cover Wyoming's natural history--there are dinosaur skeletons!--along with Native Americans who live/lived in this area; the Old West, with displays on homesteaders, sheep herders, the railroad, the military; medicine and domestic arts and other aspects of daily life in early Wyoming; and a hands-on room for kids. Photos are permitted. The museum is organized clearly on its two floors. Everything is labelled and parts are interactive, though not especially hi-tech.

On the first day I was there, almost no one else was in the museum. I ran out of time and returned the following day around the same time (mid to late afternoon) and then it was crowded. But I never had to wait to see anything I wanted to look at.

The gift shop is great! A huge section of books about all aspects of Wyoming history: the military, Native Americans, the Wild West, contemporary Wyoming, as well as cookbooks. Many tasteful gifts. Also there are food items available for sale and well as some clothing and music CDs, and lots of things for kids as well. If you are looking for Wyoming-oriented gifts, this is definitely a good place to find them.

The Wyoming State Museum is about seven blocks from the downtown central area and you can certainly walk there--I did, twice. The Museum is just around the corner from the State Capitol so that can be done the same day. It's also about a 3-4 block walk from the Historic Governor's Mansion (see separate review) so that is another option after spending time at this museum.

This is one attraction in Cheyenne that should not be missed!

“Fun Place to Bring Kiddos”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

Great hands on area! The kids have a good time here. They can do puzzles, play with dinosaurs, explore pioneer life, dress up and so much more. We love to check out the different exhibits upstairs too. We also love to shop at the gift shop when we are looking for fun, unique gifts.

“So much fun!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

My husband and I love a state history museum, and Wyoming's lives up to the standard. Lots of fun displays and "real" items, not just reproductions and placards. A fantastic collection of Native American beading and art. A few places for the children to touch and interact, but not so much that an adult feels like they've stumbled into a daycare center by mistake. A fascinating dose of local history in just a few hours. The gift shop has a lovely array of souvenirs and gifts for the folks back home. End your visit with a walk around the capitol area and see the statues.
