“If You Want To Taste The West of Yesteryear”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

Don't miss the Plains Hotel in Cheyenne! The stained glass 'roof' in the Lobby is simply exquisite! And tons of Moleworth Furniture. Built in the days when their clients arrived by Union Pacific the parking is a little lacking around the Hotel itself but the City Parking garage is withing 2 blocks and there is a drop off zone for you to unload your luggage. Rooms are historic and charming and clean. The Capitol Grille is a great place to eat and we got coupons for a free breakfast buffet which made the room very affordable. We were there for a convention and the steak we had at the banquet was excellent, as was the entire meal and the service.

if you love history and old buildings and old west boot hills and "downtowns" that stretch on for blocks and not miles then I can easily recommend the plains hotel. beautiful old building with lots of charm closely located to several bars, restaurants and shopping. the rooms are NOT modern of course, but they are very very clean and tidy, well kept, and comfortable. the lobby was under repair when we arrive due to a pipe burst and even with this i would still recommend the hotel. everything else in cheyenne is too far from anything and a little ratty, but this place is a gem.

Room Tip: get a high floor for a great view, but don't take the stairs! wyoming is elevation 6000 feet. it...

First I would like to say Thank you for your comments. I am pleased to hear you enjoyed being our guest at The Plains Hotel. She is a rare one of a kind gem that we hold great pride in. As I do apologize for the construction in the lobby it will be restored to its glorious structure that it is well known for.

If you like old hotels with lots of character and history but are not looking for the 5 or 4 star treatment, the Plains Hotel in Cheyenne may be a place you should check in to. It's relatively cheap - we paid around $80 for a double queen parlor. It does not have a doorman, valet parking, "above and beyond" customer service, or the other conveniences one finds at one of the "great" old hotels, but we found it clean and quite comfortable for a 1 night stay, and enjoyed the old-time decor and architecture very much.

Thank you for your comments. I am concerned that you were not offered Valet parking and will address this immediately with my Front Desk Manager, as we offer free valet parking to all of our guests. As the General Manager here at the Plains Hotel I believe in top notch customer service and will address this matter personally.

The Historic Plains Hotel is located in downtown Cheyenne - our family (a group of approximately 30 people) booked rooms and stayed there over the Christmas Holiday. We had a wonderful Christmas and a definite part of our wonderful time together was that we choose to stay in the Historic Plains Hotel.

If you are one who loves to see some of the history of the Old West then you should stay at the Plains Hotel. We loved the atmosphere, the old time pictures, the piano in the lobby where we all gathered to sing Christmas Carols and our Parlor rooms where we gathered to play games.

We started arranging our stay at the Plains Hotel about a month before we arrived. The biggest help for us was to work with the very friendly and helpful Sales Manager, Liz, in order to make our plans. Any questions we had about accommodations, food, shuttle, activities in Cheyenne, etc. Liz went out of her way to take the time to help us. After we arrived, the staff people who helped us seemed anxious to make our stay pleasant (which it was).

We definitely look forward to staying at the Plains Hotel next time we stay in Cheyenne. Oh! Yes! And the prices of the rooms were very reasonable!

OK, the rooms are not perfect, some issues, including bathrooms, so I would not recommend this hotel for more than perhaps 3 nights, but if it's a short stay, it's a great place, almost like a musuem if you take the time to walk the spacious lobby, look up, look at the art work on the walls, admire the furnishings. It's all beautiful. We were with family so saw several rooms. Each room and each floor has it's own unique charm. We lucked out with parking, which admittedly can be a bit of an issue, as with many city hotels. The room rates were reasonable. Very good breakfast included. We had dinner at the restaurant. Not wonderful, but not bad. Location is great for taking a scenic walk. For a 100 year old hotel, it can hold it's own against anything in it's price range. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: arrive around 4-5 PM if with car, when parking by hotel more available.

We stayed here on Thanksgiving eve without booking ahead of time and were very quickly checked in and accomodated. The foyer of this hotel built in 1911 is exquisite, as is the mezzanine level and restaurant. The hotel had a very "Shining"esque feel to it, very authentic western feel. Old ballroom and photos from its heyday were impressive. The rooms are very small, ours looked out onto an internal roof space where it looked like everyone had used it for an ashtray. Saying that I loved the hotel, the bathroom was still in an early 1900's style, tile and pink bath. Sometime during the night our bathroom tap switched itself on and then ran for about 15 seconds and turned itself off, think what you will about that.
The hotel is great, what it lacks is good service. We went down for dinner and were the first ones there. Our waiter told us about the happy hour and took our drink orders. !0 minutes later they still werent delivered, finally one was and apperently the keg had to be changed on the other. I was watching the barmaid pour our beer and she set it on the counter for our waiter who never materialised. I finally had to go up and grab this myself. During this time the two people at the bar had had a couple of drinks. I also had to go up and grab our next round as well. The waiter was nice but was never there. Food was good.
Breakfast was part of the deal and again we were the first in the dining room. The girl who was the only one there took about 2 minutes to notice us and was the most apathetc person we encountered on our trip. The next gentleman stood next to her station for 5 minutes before she raised her eyes from her phone when was playing with and seated him. The breakfast was atrocious and I didnt eat any. The pancakes were hard from being in the bain marie and the syrup hadnt been stirred so had about an inch of skin on the top that came with the serving.
We had them valet our car the night before so asked for it when checking out. 30 minutes later we were still standing on the curb with no car, I had gone inside to enquire where it was and the desk girl said" Oh, so and so was getting that (so and so was walking across the foyer) werent you? He looked like this was the first he had heard of it and went to get the keys" Was about 40 by the time it pulled up.
Nice hotel, pity about the staff.

The Hostoric Plains Hotel is a very pleasant stop for a quick getaway from Boulder. It is less than 90 minutes away. We do this at least once a year. The hotel is comfortable and up to date as it was renovated a little while ago. It mainatains the cowboy western ambiance in its lovely decor. The restaurant is open for breakfast , lunch and dinner. A bonust this time was the inclusion of a buffet breakfast in the room rate which was itself quite reasonable at $75. Noticed the complaint about parking in a previous review. Valet parking is available, not sure if there is a charge for this. As Cheyenne is relatively quiet we have never had trouble parking on the street. There is a spa on the premises though we have never tried it. Rooms are comfortable, even the most reasonable rooms have space to move around. Lots of hot water which is not always true in a hotel of this vintage. All in all a comfortable quick getaway. Check out the western store across the street, and Wyoming Home, just a block away. Several antique stores, south of the hotel about 5 blocks. Dinner at the Little Bear is always a good choice, just a short ride north on I25.
