The two-hour upper dells (above the dam) boat ride at Wisconsin Dells, Wisc., is a well narrated journey that takes you into areas of the Wisconsin River that are bounded by 500 Million year old sandstone cliffs and canyons, old growth forests and natural sand river beaches on the Wisconsin River. The boat ride, with two off-the-boat (brief) hiking stops, takes you on a stunningly visual journey through nature, history and geology that could never, ever be accessed on land. The ride is easy for all ages and equally fascinating for everyone. Choose a clear day (wear sunblock and bring a hat) and enjoy the ride (and ignore the horribly honky tonk nearby tourist traps in this town). This is the Upper Dells Boat Tour, not "duck boats" or speed-boats. The double-decker boats depart throughout the day, so we didn't have to fuss about our precise arrival time at the dock and we got great seats up top. Our wait for the "next" boat was just 15 minutes. From my ticket stub: access at 107 Broadway, Wisconsin Dells, Wisc., where there is free parking while you're on the tour.
