I am going to just put a copy here of the letter I wrote to them.We rented a two bedroom villa at Christmas Mountain in Wisconsin Dells from 03/22/2004 through 03/25/2004 and there are a few concerns I wish to address. To begin with, I would rate our overall stay as horrible.
We are time share owners and belong to Interval International, but on this occasion, we were unable to exchange, so we decided to rent a unit for a few days. Upon checking in on Monday, we noticed that the villa was not as nice as we are used to exchanging for, but we felt it was acceptable. We noticed that the furniture in the living room was quite beat up and appeared dirty, the flower arrangement on the kitchen table appeared old and dirty, things like that, but we could live with that.
The toilet seats appeared to have not been cleaned, but we felt it may have been rushed through and I cleaned them myself. We left our unit on Monday and did not get back until about 10:30 that night. Immediately upon turning down the bed covers, we knew there was going to be a problem. The entire bed smelled horrible. We decided to strip the linens and put on replacement sheets. The replacement sheet had a large blood stain in the middle of it. All of the bedding, sheets, blankets, bed spread, even the pillows, had a horrible smell. It honestly smelled like someone had slept on all of it and it had never been washed. The mattress even had an odor to it. We decided to wash all the bedding and go sleep on the twin beds. We used our own t-shirts for pillow cases and began the task of washing the bedding. The end of last summer and early fall, Wisconsin had a problem with these bugs that look like lady bugs, but they swarm and bite. Once winter came, however, they died off. We had this problem where we lived in Wisconsin as well and I had not seen one of these bugs since late last fall. This leads me to my next problem. On Monday night, we also noticed a few of these bugs laying around. It seemed rather odd to me as I thought they were dead and I could not believe they had been missed all winter and not removed. Tuesday morning, while continuing to wash all the bedding, I began to notice the overall unclean condition of the villa. There were hairs in the showers. The drawers in the kitchen had food and dirt in them. The dishwasher was filthy. The kitchen counters and cabinets were dirty. The furniture in the living room smelled. The grill outside on the screened in porch was dirty. The placemats were in need of a good cleaning or, better yet, replacement. In addition, we started seeing more and more of these bugs, which we now realized were alive. We were gone all day Tuesday. By the time we got back on Tuesday night, the bug infestation became overwhelming. On Wednesday morning, I finally called over to the office to let them know how I felt about the unit. They asked what I wanted them to do and I told them that, as we would be checking out on Thursday anyways, there really was nothing they could do. We had already washed all the bedding. I didn't feel like having housekeeping come in that late in our stay. My main problem was the bugs. By this time, they were all over. They were on the windows, walls, showers, sinks, floors, everywhere. They told me that they had bugs in all the villas, so moving to another villa really was not going to solve the main problem we were having. I told them I was very concerned about the bug problem. As I said, I have not seen one of these bugs alive since last fall. They claimed that they had an exterminator come and were told there was nothing they could, that they were in the woodwork. I told them that I really do not think this is acceptable. We were gone on Wednesday during the day. We came back to our villa Wednesday evening and the bug infestation was out of control.
They were flying all over the kitchen, landing on us and biting as we were sitting. Everywhere we looked, there were bugs. My husband decided to lay down for awhile and was woken up by a bug biting him and bugs crawling on his bedding. By 10:30 p.m., we could not take it anymore.
We decided to drive the 2-1/2 hours home rather than endure that last night there. I called over to the office and told them we were checking out. The guy acted like he could not have cared less. He told me that is just part of staying in the woods. I'm sorry, but I disagree. I personally feel that you need to do something about the bug infestation you have. If the bugs are that bad now, imagine what they will be once summer rolls around. We spent $350 to $400 to stay at Christmas Mountain and I can honestly say that it was the worst vacation I can remember having ever. I personally feel that something needs to be done about the bug infestation or you need to pre-warn guests just as other resorts have to warn about construction and renovation. If this is, indeed, just "part of staying in the woods", guests should be notified before they waste their money, exchange weeks, or exchange points. I am truly dissatisifed with my stay at Christmas Mountain and will never be back there. Thank you, Connie Rodgers
