“Fun for family with young kids!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013

We've been to Great Wolf in the Dells several times on family vacations. It is a LARGE hotel with an attached water park with different areas and features. Very easy to get to, right off the highway.

The best:

Rooms. We always had a medium-large suite, with two queen beds and a king with a living room area, a table, and a kitchen. It's a nice, open layout which accommodates four or five very nicely. New and nice. Always clean and room service was in and out and we never saw them. Excellent job.

Activities. There is plenty to keep young ones occupied on the grounds, from a coloring den where they can make their own shirts and crafts to Magic Quest (former Wiley's Woods) to the water park to a build-a-bear-like station to tours to story time in the lobby.

Restaurants. You don't really need to go out of the place if you have the money to pay for dining. Sometimes we ate at the restaurants there, sometimes we cooked and ate in our rooms. Certainly the latter option is more cost effective.

Worst:

Layout. I know that we're always in the running for fattest nation on Earth, and exercise is a good thing when done properly, but after your second day going to a water park with your kids, that ten minute walk (on your vacation!) to the water park and back to the rooms gets pretty old. Why no one thought of putting the water park and pool in the middle of the place and making all wings equidistant is beyond me. Engineers, I suppose. Such large wings also guarantee that kids will be running down the halls at all times. Once we stayed on the same weekend as a middle school hockey conference. Good thing the suites have an extra room out front as sound cushioning. I can't imagine being in a room without when all those kids are running around. We weren't by the highway, at least, which can also be very noisy.

Expense. It is a very expensive stay, comparatively. A cheaper hotel (without the same size and cost and noise concerns) and a trip or two or three to Noah's Ark water park may be better use of your money. Book any vacation carefully.

In sum, for a family with young kids, it's a great place to stay a few times if you can afford it. At least it was for us.

Room Tip: Book carefully (a nice suite for the amount of people) and away from the highway and as close to the...

Have been going to Great Wolf Lodge on and off for several years. 9 year old daughter loves the place! Great for relaxing and you never really need to leave if you don't want to. Buffet breakfast is adequate in quality and selection, not the best but not terrible. Food at Loose Moose is good, pizza is weak, but convenient and probably geared more for the kids. Water park is loads of fun and very clean with pleasant guards. Magi quest was a nice diversion and my daughter enjoyed it.

Took grandkids and they had a really good time. Besides the indoor waterpark - which is really great, there were activities all the time. We were disappointed that we didn't have a kitchen. The kids cabin was cute but the kids said their beds were hard. There was a bed and a sofa bed in the living area. The sofa bed was awful. Enjoyed the balcony and the fireplace. Would go again; but would choose a different type of room. Wonderful family fun. Restaurant was reasonable and had good food.

Room Tip: Make sure the type of room you pick suits the number and type of people staying.

We went to The Dells for my brother’s wedding. He reserved a block of rooms at Great Wolf Lodge and we booked one. Our room was generously sized with a small outdoor balcony. It had two queen sized beds and full size couch as well. There was also a mini-frig and a microwave. The décor was nice and it was quiet as well. The attached water park looked nice, but we were busy with wedding activities and did not use it. Which leads me to my only complaint; the water park is an automatic charge, despite there being a separate pass for its use. If you have kids and plan to enjoy the water park, this is a very nice place and a good value. If you don’t plan on playing in the water, it’s a nice place at a decent price.

I reviewed several hotels in the Dells to find a place with attractions for my 1 and 3 year old children, a place that had fun things to do for my husband and I and that was all in one place.

TLDR: get on the mailing list, get a room rate that's on sale or a special deal. Paying full price may not be worth it BUT that being said with 2 little kids it was perfect.

Water park: there are 3 indoor areas and all 3 are fun. there is a few nice areas just for little kids. the Racoon Lagoon and wave pool are right next to the BEST!! water slides for adults so we would take turns going down grown up slides while the kids played happily in the shallow waters. I have only been to one other waterpark in my life so I may not be the best to review this park, but it was fun and had lots of options and it had lockers and a bar.

Dining: the Loose Moose pub service was good and the food was just as good as any pub food. We had the pizza delivered to our room and it was just as good as pizza hut or dominoes. All the prices were reasonable ($40 for 2 kids, 2 entrees and 2 beers). The beers were big ($5) ! There is a candy/coffee/ice cream shop and it was yummy, and charming. the staff gave me a free cup :)

Hotel: The room was clean, it had a fridge and small kitchen sink and microwave. We had a themed patio suite. I got it on a "special" so it was $167 a night. Room 174, it was a bit of a walk to the lobby but close to the Magic quest games. Higher numbered rooms are further from the main lobby. Everyone that worked here was nice. They are even sending back my forgotten camera via UPS.

PERKS: They have coloring activities and kid friendly decorations in the lobby. We got a Puppy Paws Pass, and it was worth it to have little activities to do around the hotel The arcade was a bit of a rip off but this place was my son's absolute favorite part of the whole place. If you are going to go back there a few times over your stay, go ahead and do the highest number of credits on your playing card and save the money instead of putting a few dollars on here and there, we spent a good amount of time in there and I wish I would've just put the $50 and got the deal on the play points at the beginning!!

The Magic Quest Game was $32 for a wand and access to both Magic and Shadow Quest games. The game was really fun and interesting for me and my husband and enough to keep our 3 year old entertained. When you wave your wand at objects around the hotel they move around and light up. If just my husband and I were to play it we could've completed it in the 3 days we were there but with my son and daughter we were only able to complete 6 quests. We thought it was worth it if you actually finish the game. If you have little ones, save some money and just get the cheap wand and just the shadow quests.

Pros: the room was adequate, the beds were comfy and my kids loved the bunk beds. The arcade was fun for my 3 year old, lobby activities made the stay great, great hotel staff, waterpark was clean and easy to get around with little kids, we were able to park right outside our room's patio door and we didn't really have to leave the hotel because we had all we needed there. And parking was super convenient. Get the paw pass, its $60 or $40 and getting the stuff on the pass is fun.

Cons: tiny hotel bathroom, parents couldn't go down bigger slides with their kids so my son wasn't able to get up enough nerve to go down alone, the "build a bear" workshop was just a lady in the lobby and so was the "cub club" It was advertised as something special but it wasn't.

Room Tip: lower numbers are close to the lobby, first floor rooms have access to arcade, pool, magic quest wit...

This was our second trip to the Dells and the main reason we made a detour of a few hundred miles to visit again was Great Wolf Lodge. As a smaller party this time we went for Kids Cabin Suite for 6 and were not disappointed. The children loved the cabin - its a great solution and means you don't need two rooms if you don't want to go to bed at the same time as your children!

Improvements since our last visit:
- The water temperature nice and warm
- The grill now offers a good range of vegis with the kids meals
- Kids activities in the lounge now include a mini disco, colouring, face paints and balloon modelling in the early evening
- Check in was significantly improved including an on-line option

Things which were as great as last time.
- Scoops spa - brilliant once again
- Magi quest - hours of fun for boys and girls
- Whole place was extremely clean
- Fab breakfasts

The only slight down side was that our room faced towards one of the rides which was lit up at night and a couple of times it did feel like close encounters with lights coming in through the curtains - but it is a minor point.

This time we went to a timeshare type promo one morning - we had no intention of buying we live in the UK so it was pointless for us - but sitting through an hours presentation gave us $100 of vouchers to spend at GWL which bought us a nice dinner for 4 in the grill and the kids had the rest to spend in the shop. They also gave us a gift card for use in external restaurants but we couldnt use it as you have to register on-line and print out vouchers etc which wasnt really doable as we were on vacation but hey who cares we had a free meal!!

We have stayed at this lodge twice already, and each stay was wonderful! Both times we slept in the Wolf Den, which has bunk beds inside what looks like a small doghouse for the kids, with tv included. The room is great, and the beds are very comfortable. It has a porch too, which is nice. The room was always very clean. The water park is very clean, and comfortable to be in: it's not a loud place, and the rides/pools are nice and fun, not crazy, like you would find at bigger water parks. The lodge also has Cub Club most of the time in the lobby: friendly staff ready to play with the kids with all kinds of neat stuff, like animal balloons, face painting, drawing, crafts, etc. Kids get excited every time they see them! The lodge also has a kids spa, where children can have their finger and toe nails done in a kids decorated atmosphere. The restaurant has great food for both kids and adults, and they even give wolf's ears to the kids. Food is delicious and healthy too. The lodge also has a souvenir store with all kinds of neat stuff, plus they offer a very unusual array of kids tattoos. Finally, every night they have story time and a very unique show, where kids are invited to show up in their pajamas. My wife and I stayed with our 6 and 10-year old girls, and we all had a great time.

Room Tip: If you have young kids, try getting the Wolf Den: it's the best!
