We arrived at 8:15 without a reservation and the place was nearly empty. The hostess said that we could not be seated since we didn't have a reservation. The next "available" reservation was at 8:45, so we were asked to wait until then. Okay. It was weird that we had to wait a half an hour when the restaurant was practically empty, but we played along guessing that maybe a large group was scheduled to come in around 8:30. In the entire time we were waiting, only two other couples came in and were seated. By the time 8:45 rolled around, about half of the place was still empty. Oh well. We were seated in a nice booth, and let it go without saying anything.
Our server, Ivan, was just fantastic. He was patient, explained the menu well, and was very thorough. He took his time and made sure we had everything we needed. The sourdough bread was just outstanding!
Our steaks were great. I don't even like steak, but I LOVED my filet. It was cooked to perfection. The potato and vegetables were cold, so that was a bummer. We were too full to order any dessert, but we were satisfied with how tasty the steak was.
Warning: Ho-Chunk is the smokiest casino I have ever stepped foot in. We were planning to spend some time gambling, but couldn't stand the smoke. You literally see the smoke cloud hovering when you walk in, and within seconds, we both had burning eyes and scratchy throats. Copper Oak isn't too bad with the smoke (it's upstairs, the casino is downstairs), but there is a bar area in the restaurant where patrons are allowed to light up. Just be aware if you are sensitive to smoke.
