“Great time had by all at Chula Vista”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2011

We spent a long weekend at Chula Vista Resort in Wisc. Dells from August 5-8, 2011. We had a group of almost 40 with us, both adults and children. We stayed in a 3 bedroom unit on the first floor of the condo building. The building is connected to the waterpark by underground tunnels or outside across the parking lot. We are all from the Chicago area so it was a pleasant 3 to 3 1/2 hour drive to the Dells.

Our unit had a full kitchen and living room area. It also had a large Jacuzzi in the main room next to the sliding glass doors to the outside. In addition to the 3 bedrooms, there are 3 bathrooms. We had 3 families in our unit and there was plenty of room for all of us. Each family had their own bedroom and there was still an additional pull-out coach in the living room that we didn’t use.
The waterpark was plenty big and since it was August, both the inside and outside areas were open. It has areas for the little ones, as well as bigger slides for the older kids and adults.

This was our second stay at Chula Vista. The first trip was in November about two years ago. It was nice then but even better now because of the additional outdoor waterpark area. Our group also rented two cabanas near the outdoor pools that were our private area for the first three days.

It’s a nice resort, and the 3 bedroom units are great. We brought most of our food from home and really didn’t need to spend additional money eating at the resort. if we didn't want to. A fun time was had by all.

Room Tip: If you are going with 2 -3 families, book the condos with kitchen instead of seperate rooms. it pro...

We just got back from a 3 night stay at Chula Vista - with such a late check-in and such an early check-out (10:30 am!!!!!), this equates to not as much time as you think. We stayed in a GOLF VILLA - it was nice to have the kitchenette and was only a 5 minute walk over to the waterparks (don't even bother calling a shuttle!). However, the carpeting was so dirty that our feet were filthy just from walking around in our room, the A/C unit runs non-stop & is very loud - so loud that you need to turn the TV up past 50 just to hear it! (on a plus - it helped us from hearing our neighbors!) They ended "checking us out" of our room a day early - which we found out when we tried to get in and our key didn't work!! We had to walk back over to the hotel area and were told that we'd need to wait in line (over an hour!!!) to get our keys redone!!!! That wasn't happening & we finally found someone from management in security who fixed the problem for us - in a 15 minute wait (with no compensation for the problem...of course!)
The WATERPARLS were OK. We have a small child, so thought this would be perfect over the bigger waterparks. Everything is so spread out that you need to decide on which area you want to be in before you head out. The wave pool is behind the condos (very small! Hard to be in with only 6 tubes bumping into everyone!). The childrens lazy river was so small that it wasn't even worht it. The "big" lazy river had so few tubes that 75% of the people were just walking through the river. The pools are in need of a massive cleaning, as you can see the black slime at the water level on each of the pools. I couldn't find a baby changing table in the pool "locker room", so had to use the bench. The outdoor waterpark is OK as well, but I can see older kids getting bored pretty easily. There were ample amount of chairs outside, so no need to wake at 6am to put a towel out!! There is only 1 swimming pool - very small and outside, so don't expect to be able to do that.
HOWLER'S SPORTS BAR RESTAURANT was horrible! Service was very slow and the waitress forgot several times what we ordered. The food was just as bad.
MARGARITAS BAR & GRILL was OK. The food was average and the service was average as well. The margaritas were on the weak side, so not really worth the money!
THE CLUB - we were signed up to preview the club through someone from marketing contacting us when we made our reservation. The man we met with was so rude and unprofessional that the time we spent with him wasn't worth the $100 vouchers for the horrible food we bought with them - skip the preview, you won't want to spend your money eating at this resort anyhow!
I think it's safe to say that we will never be back at this resort. We will stick to the others that we have gone to and enjoy. The only reason we tried this place was because the rooms were much cheaper than Kalahari & Wilderness...there's always a reason why!!

We stayed at chula vista in Jan 2009 and the waterpark was freezing--so cold that the life guards had sweat shirts on. We decided to try it out again this time in summer. To start off check in took forever--we were 5th in line to check in and it took 35 minutes. The hotel and rooms were good and the indoor waterpark and outdoor waterpark were good as I have a 7 year old daughter. The most frustrating thing was the lack of customer service. The little market fresh counter where you buy drinks, doughnuts etc.. the 3 girls working this small shop cared more about what they were doing after there shift then helping us. This is the little shop right by were you check in. My family went there with 2 other families and we ate at the bar one night and they brought all the food out at once except for one of the families. We all ate and finally they brought out the food that they forgot--and they charged them for it. So just imagine 3 kids and 4 adults waiting for another family to eat--not fun. I truly think there are better choices in the Dells besides Chula Vista. They really need to work on customer service

We had stayed at Chula Vista previously and had a great experience. This time was quite the opposite. The condo was still very nice, large and our room was clean. Perhaps the summer draws a different crowd, however, I have certain expectations for all hotels. The service overall was poor. The pools were grossly under-staffed, and several lifeguards were noticed to be falling asleep on their chairs. There are too many waterpark users from other hotels coming into the facility.
We had a difficult time sleeping with a ridiculous amount of noise coming from other guests at all hours of the night. We were also awoken by staff banging on our door at a very late hour looking for a misplaced voucher. This should have been handled differently. Security had to be called on more than one occassion for noise. When I approached the supervisor, Emmanuel, I was told he could do nothing in regards to my concerns. I have young children and anticipate return trips to the dells, however, I would not stay here again.

Be preparred to wait a lot at this resort. We checked in at 1pm to see if our room was available seeing that check-out for all rooms is at 10:30am. We waited over 30 minutes to do this (with only 2 others ahead of us in line). The room was not available but we were able to get our wristbands for the waterpark- but couldn't unload our car or change other than in a dirty/wet "locker-room." that was an oversized bathroom. We were given a phone number to call at 4pm to get our room keys. We called the number and were told by the frontdesk (as he laughed) that we would need to wait in a line that had about 50 people ahead of us. This took over an hour just to pick up my key that was simply sitting at the desk. We left our son swimming during this time but we lost out on another hour plus of swim time due to this. THe room was beautiful and well maintained. The waterpark was super crowded but nice. Again we had to wait an hour to go down one of the larger slides due to limited "tubes" (wait in line for a tube) climb a lot of stairs, wait in line again (over 30 minutes) for one slide. I do wish there was a way for those unable to climb all those stairs to be able to slide. It does not seem to be an ADA accessible facility. But we were all able to swim and had fun.

Room Tip: Go for the Suites!

We stayed here to try something new in the Dells. Check in was ridiculous. They need to stagger check in times to alleviate the chaos in the lobby at 4. We checked in early to try and avoid the mess and then had to check in a second time to get our keys. It was a late check in and an early check out so for the prices' our stay was less than 48 hours and quite expensive. During check out in the hallways of the condos, they had about 10-15 staff waiting outside doors and complaining about people not leaving their rooms on time even though it was 20 minutes early. Made guests feel rushed and it was very unprofessional in my eyes. Buffet at Market Fresh was great. Some of the lifeguards on staff were excellent like at the outdoor waterpark areas however, the kiddie part inside was understaffed and parents were not watching their kids in the toddler areas in and outdoors. Several times my son got hit by other kids going done one right after the other without anyone making sure it was clear. All in all a nice stay, but I think our visit to Great Wolf was just as nice without all the check in and check out nuisances. They do provide life jackets if you forget yours. If you wear aqua socks you are required to take them off for many of the slides. We also had chew spit in our bathroom upon arrival and people smoking across the hall.

I had read the mixed reviews on here before our trip so will add my 2 cents. We (family of 8) stayed for four nights in a 2 BR condo. It was great. Kitchen had everything we needed. The living area is huge. Plenty of space for our family and having 2 baths was a lifesaver. We had originally thought of staying at Great Wolf in their 2 BR condo but theirs only had 1 bath. We got a good rate (Sunday Super Saver) by starting our stay on Sunday night. My kids are all older so weren't interested in the water park here(we love Noahs Ark) but we definitely didn't see overcrowding or terribly long lines. Possibly because we weren't here on the weekend. We didn't eat at the resort either, just used it as our home base. I was prepared for long waits at the elevators (never happened), long lines at check-in(didn't happen either) and kids running up and down the halls... again, didn't happen! If it had I would have been fine with it... we are talking about a summertime Dells visit. This is a kid-oriented, crowded place. What do you expect? The condos only have trash removal and towel replacement and one of the days they didn't show. We just had one of our kids bring the trash downstairs and they threw it in the big bin. Not a problem. Also, we had brought our own bath towels so that wasn't a problem either. Some people just look for problems and don't relax and enjoy their trip. This was a beautiful resort in a nice setting on the river. We knew it wasn't on the main strip but decided the river location was worth it. Only a ten minute drive or less to downtown. We did have to park farther down most of the time but again we didn't let it bother us. I would definitely stay here again!
