I grew up in Wausau, and have lived in Madison for the past ten years. So when the Great Dane, a Madison staple and legend, opened up a location in Wausau a few years ago I could not have been more pleased (well, I would have been more pleased if it were downtown).
The food is consistently above average, you'll not be disappointed. That said, it will not blow you away. The menu is large, though, and everyone will have a hard time deciding what to enjoy. The appetizer portions are large, and will definitely keep you pleased until food arrives, or happily occupied at the bar.
The Great Dane brews all of their own beer, some of it on-site, including seasonal specials. Like the food, most of the beers are just above average, although several are quite good. Their Emerald Stout is among the best stouts I've had (and I am a Stout person), and Crop Cricle Wheat, and Cherry Wheat, are excellent.
The atmosphere is fun for dinner or drinking, with friends or with family and kids.
On Sundays, they offer a brunch buffet for $15, which is the biggest spread for a brunch I've ever seen, with a wide variety of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert items that are all good.
The Great Dane is also a great place to host parties, as they have a wonderful ballroom, as well as group dining spaces that are available without a fee. I had my daughter's baby shower hosted here, as well as anniversaries and birthday parties.
