My husband and I won a public television auction for a two night stay at the Green Fountain Inn. Neither my husband nor I had ever stayed at a B&B so we weren't sure what to expect. What a treat the Green Fountain Inn was--we absolutely loved it! Because the busy season hasn't quite started yet, we had the run of the entire house! Each morning we would come downstairs to find a yummy breakfast set up for us at a lovely little table. Cindy and Emily couldn't have been nicer and more accomodating. We were not aware that dinner would only be served Friday night so unfortuanately we had already eaten when we arrived; but judging by the wonderful smells that filled the house Chef Keith is a force to be reckoned with! Next time we will make sure we arrive on a dinner night famished--ha!ha!
Waupaca was a cute little town that was fun to explore and the locals were welcoming. We spent a little time at a bar called "Paca"--The bartender there was so nice and quite funny--should have asked her name so I could post it and give her credit--she really was sweet and made you feel welcome. The bar was pretty smokey, so if you're allergic or have an aversion to cigarette smoke it might not be your place, in which case you might want to try T.W. Martin's (see below).
There is an antique store in a 3 story building (maybe an old school house?) to wander through if you enjoy that kind of thing--I easily got lost in it for a couple of hours. Behind the antique shop (there's a weird staircase that leads down to the parking lot) we had a great dinner at an Irish bar/restaurant called T.W. Martin's (locals call it T Dubbs) located in an old carriage house. Excellent food, friendly service, historic atmosphere, and no smoking allowed which is nice for people who are sensitive to smoke (not so nice if you like to smoke a cigar when you're out like my husband--ha!ha!). We will definitely return to T Dubbs next time!!!
There are quaint little retail shops, too. My favorite was, "Panache", a cute little boutique clothing shop where I had to try on practically half of the store--thank you to the owner for being so helpful and hardworking and to my husband for being so patient--lol!!!
We also enjoyed spending time in some of the neighboring towns. We attended an Amish quilt auction (they also had other items like homemade baskets, birdhouses, lawn decor etc..)in Amherst on Saturday morning and we had a great time; even won a few items at very good prices!
On Saturday night we went to a waterfront bar/restaurant called, Clear Water Harbor which I think is actually located in King, WI but the address is listed as Waupaca on their website (www.clearwaterharbor.com). It was a five minute drive from the B&B. There was a really talented blues/rock band and we thouroughly enjoyed the music, dancing, food and atmosphere. They also offer day and evening cruises (some dining) starting Memorial weekend. Unfortunately we were a week early for that so again--we'll have to catch that next time.
We had an fun andeventful yet relaxing weekend at the Green Fountain Inn--even better than we had imagined. We will be back soon!! Thanks again to Cindy, Emily and Keith!!!!
