Owner description: Door County Maritime Museum: Enjoy tales of bold ship captains, brave seaman, innovative shipbuilders, rugged fishermen, stalwart lighthouse keepers and much, much more--sea stories abound! The Door County Maritime Museum offers three unique visitor experiences. Its year-round 20,000 square foot flagship museum is located between the dowtown bridges on Sturgeon Bay's workking waterfront. It features four large exhibit galleries and the immaculately restored seagoing tugboat John Purves built in 1919. The iconic Cana Island Lighthouse, located Baileys Harbor, is a Door County treasure. The northern museum is a hidden gem featuring the classic wooden fish tug Hope. It is located in the historic fishing village of Gills Rock alongside the infamous "Death's Door" passage. Both are open seasonally.

“Late afternoon find”

Enjoyed the history and background of the ship building industry in Sturgeon Bay. We were late and didn't complete our visit before closing - we were offered a free return the next day to finish touring the museum.

“Must See--Door County Rainy Day Activity”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

We enjoyed touring the restored tug boat, The collection includes a Pirate Exhibit, which was great fun. The restoration of the tug took you to the early 60's. The tug was used as a radio repeating station in the Caribbean and saw service in WW II hauling supplies to the Aleutian Islands. It later towed log rafts in Lake Superior and finally came to Sturgeon Bay as a tow and salvage tug. The boat and shipbuilding history of the great lakes is told well.

Ahoy! Thanks much for sharing all the details from your tour of the historic tugboat John Purves. The old gal has led an exciting life since her construction in 1919. I am particularly fascinated with her WWII service as an Army tug in the battle for the Aleutian Islands. We are thrilled to have the tug as our museum ship! Thanks again...visit us again when next your travels bring you to the Door Peninsula.

“Great for boat buffs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

Anyone interested in all things maritime will enjoy this museum. The tug tour makes it all real; you can see how the sailors lived and worked. The pirate exhibit would be fun for kids.

Ahoy! Thanks for the wonderful review...great to hear you enjoyed your visit to the musuem and your tour of the historic tugboat John Purves. I try to guide tours on the tug periodically, just to have the opportunity to wander around her myself...she's quite a vessel! Come see us again soon.

“Excellent Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

Family of all ages found this place interesting. Big enough to make it worthwhile and small enough to see it all. Our friends who went with had been there before ad went back again, still finding it very interesting. My husband who loves all history around boats and motors sad it was amazing.

“Interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

This museum has a lots to see from over 100 years of history of building boats and ships, wood carving, model boats, pirates and a lot more. It gives you a true look into maritime history of the area. The gift shop has some interesting items for sale. I enjoyed it as you have 4 seperate areas to peruse at your own leisure.
