This place has good burgers, a lot of interesting beers on tap, and great sweet potato fries.

“Not your usual place, yum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2011

The last time I'd eaten at this location was years ago, different name, different owner, not very different food. When our first choice was closed for a private party, we decided to gamble on it. We usually only eat at places we're familiar with or had read good reviews (of course here on TA). We figured, well, at the worst, we'd try something different and be disappointed but no longer hungry.

Happily, 8th Street Ale surprised us from the minute we walked in. The restaurant was nicely decorated with plenty of space between the tables with welcoming colors and lighting. On one wall is a very large mural of a famous German castle, very interesting. The list of beers was extensive with detailed, clever descriptions. When DH commented to the waitress about his surprise at having so many beers on tap, she said with a nice smile in her voice, "well we ARE the Ale House". The menu was not the typical fare. There were nice twists to German fare such as jumbo pretzels, one with Jalapeno stuffing, the Hoffbrau open faced sandwich, and a haystack of onion rings. There was a German pork shank dish that sounded very interesting (I can't remember the name), but they also had typical American fare such as wraps, appetizers and several entrees.

I had a classic cheeseburger which came on a buttered and toasted Sheboygan hard roll (once you've had one of those, you'll never want one of those mass-produced ones again.) The burger was so juicy, unless it was the butter on the bun, it was dripping. DH's Pork Schnitzel sandwich had a thin sauerkraut layer with other seasonings. His came with a generous portion of fresh fruit, I opted for the homemade potato chips. They were much more flavorful than most I've had. We finished by splitting their Double-Chocolate Stout Cake. Our very friendly, polite waitress told us it had chocolate stout in it, then they topped it with warm ganache. Very tasty but it is a less sweet, drier type of cake.

We went in expecting basic, Cisco food, in an OK atmosphere but instead left very pleased to find something out of the ordinary, served exceedingly well.

“Can't wait to go back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2011

This is a bar and restaurant located downtown Sheboygan, it is basically split down the middle with the bar on one side and restaurant on the other. We were on the restaurant side. The other customers ranged in age from children to retirees.
The beer selection was much better than a typical bar. The waitress provided us with a beer menu that described in detail the various beers. She encouraged us to first try a sample before we ordered a pint.
We had a burger and portabella mushroom sandwhich. Both were excellent. Hot, fresh, soft buns and a generous amount of fries. The food was so good, I was thinking about what to try next time we visit while I was eating!
We did not try any appetizers, but we heard someone comment that the cheese curds are good.
The worst part of the place was that the bathroom doors were propped open. That was odd.
We will definitely go back.

“Bar locale with great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2011 via mobile

We tried this place because we had a discount coupon. Bar on one side with sit down dining on the other. Not much ambiance but we were happily surprised by the quality of the food; very fresh salad, deliciously prepared salmon and attentive service. The kitchen obviously takes pride in what in turns out and pays attention to detail. Eager to try this place again!
