On our way home from “up north,” we decided to stop in Sheboygan to try this restaurant that has been raved about. It was a Saturday night and the place was packed. We had to put our name on the waiting list. While waiting, we walked around their little store which had some very interesting pieces and lots of wine selections. Based on what I saw, I knew this was going to be a more “upscale” place to eat.
Two stools opened up at the bar so we opted to take advantage of that. The lady behind the bar was terrific. She was very attentive and helpful, answering questions and providing recommendations. It was clear after looking at the menu that this was not your typical American pizza place. They had lots of toppings that I had not heard of and needed to inquire about. In the end, there were several pizzas we would have wanted to try but we chose one for $16.
While we waited, we were provided with bread, parmesan cheese and olive oil. I thought it was good but my husband thought it could have been better if the bread was delivered warm. The pizza arrived quickly but as a previous reviewer mentioned, there wasn’t much to it. I would describe it as a flatbread type pizza. The taste was just ok but we were still hungry at the end of it. Plus, I know that they have a wood burning oven but I didn’t expect some of the crust to be burnt/black and inedible. I ended up cutting it off leaving even less pizza to eat.
I agree with the previous reviewer, I would give the wait staff 5 stars. And maybe in Il Ritrovo’s defense, this is what an upscale pizza place should be like and maybe my taste buds are not as refined. But for the pizza itself, I give it only 2 stars. I’m glad we went because I heard so much about Il Ritrovo but I do not feel compelled to go back
