My partner & I stayed for a week at Whispering Pines over the 4th of July, 2006. This property is downright beautiful. Consists of 6 log side-by-sides (like log cabin duplexes), a historic main lodge (that a large family or group can rent out), rental homes set back from the lake in the woods, and a small one-bedroom more "rustic" cabin for two. It is all situated on a quiet, natural, and undeveloped end of Lake Pickerel. Great location, feels "remote" but within easy driving distance (~5 minutes) to St. Germain. There is a tennis court (nicely maintained) as well as a fish filleting house for the serious angler.
The Norway "rustic" cabin is absolutely perfect for couples. It's only "rustic" because it does not have a dishwasher or central air/heat, and is a 3-season rental. Tastefully decorated with northwoods motif (moose sillouhette lamps, moose plates, etc.), it sports a newly remodeled kitchenette with sink, full-size fridge, cabinet space, nice dishware, all the pots/pans/ammenities needed. The bed was comfy, and a pine shelving unit in the bedroom provided plenty of space for our belongings. The bathroom was also remodeled, shower pressure was good with plenty of hot water. The cabin's original log walls are carved with the names of travelers dating back to the 1950's. There is a small gas-powered room heater (resembling a fire place) that provided plenty of warmth on cooler evenings. Also has a small television with local channels. I can't tell you how cute and charming this cabin is. We loved every inch of it.
The Norway cabin has a furnished screen porch (great for board games and meals). It also comes equipped with a picnic table, weber grill and clay fire pit (as do the other rentals), which we used nightly.
Our hosts were generous & hospitable. Jeff delivered dry wood and some lighter fluid when we couldn't get our fire going the first night. He was also more than happy to help us beginner fisher-women get the hang of a new reel. Maria took time to talk and mingle with all the guests, and gave us a pair of souvenir mugs on the house.
There is a small, sandy beach for swimming, and a few different boat docks. Our hosts let us set fireworks off from the dock over the lake. Each cabin comes with a row boat, and you can pay to put a small motor on the back of it for a week. You can also rent their pontoon, "Old Blue", which putters around slowly but was great for a day of fishing and lounging on the lake. Other guests brought their own boats and there is a put-in right on the property.
This property was beautiful, on a relaxing, calm corner of the lake (no big waves, lots of privacy from the main boating area). Everything was spread out nicely, so you didn't feel like you were on top of your neighboring vacationers.
I've camped and stayed at other cabins in this area of WI, and nothing came close to Whispering Pines. A true hidden gem. Will definately be going back!
