We made the mistake of having dinner at the White Stag in on Friday, July 6th. My wife and I were visiting our son who is a camp counselor in the Wisconsin Northwoods this summer. We had heard of the White Stag Inn from a number of friends who had dined there previously, but this was our first opportunity to visit this restaurant. Perhaps we dined there on an off night, perhaps we didn't.
The restaurant doesn't take reservations. Fair enough. But the restaurant should seat people of the same party size in the order in which they check in with the hostess. A party of 3 that arrived 10 minutes after we did was seated ahead of us and was served 30 minutes before us. Our waitress was nowhere to be found most of the evening. When my wife voiced our collective concern to the hostess about 50 minutes into our marathon waiting session, the hostess responded "So?! What do you want me to do about it?" The food finally arrived an hour and fifteen minutes after we placed the order. Half of the chicken I ordered was good; half was overcooked. My wife ordered the filet and it was dry and overdone. My son's steak was perfect. If this was baseball, 1 out of 3 would be a good batting average. Not so good if you are running a restaurant. But then no one at the White Stag was running the establishment that evening. After waiting ten minutes to pay our server, my wife asked the bartender if he was the manager of the restaurant. He told her that he was part of the family that owned the White Stag. My wife told him that the service had been poor, the food mediocre, and we were still waiting to pay the bill. The bartender was like a character out of Seinfeld. He told her that everyone in the restaurant was busy and she would have to wait. When she remarked that we had waited an hour for the food and that others who had been seated after us had already eaten and paid the bill, he said, "Well, what did you order? Maybe they ordered their steaks medium rare?!" When she mentioned that they were in the customer service business, he replied, "well sometimes the customer isn't always right!" Well this time the customer was right. Do yourself a favor and take a pass on the White Stag Inn. I wish we had.
