“Downtown tradition with a bit of whimsy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2014

This is a fine place for simple hamburger fare with delicious malts and shakes made the old fashioned way. The collection of Kewpee dolls can be viewed from the counter stools or booths. A longtime tradition for a reason.

“Rare Vanishing Burger Species”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

Kewpee's is one of the last of an historic chain that goes back to 1923. I'm not even aware of another one anywhere in the country (if you know of any, please let me know). Having grown up with it, whether I am visiting Racine or just whizzing by on I-94, I make a point to be blessed with Kewpee burgers, homemade rootbeer, malts, crispy crinkle fries dipped in mayo (like the French), and chili. Make a beeline for this cheeseburger 'fix'. None other tastes like these. Years ago I asked the original owner why they were so good and so juicy. He related that every day they get fresh meat from a meat purveyor in Racine, and make their own patties.
This is a DINER, with U-shaped counters with stools, or table seating. The original classic building had to be demolished because the parking ramp built over it circa 1960, could not be demolished without damaging the original Kewpee building. But it retains its funky casual quality, and is a fun, exceptionally economical place to go, kid friendly, flavorful and filling.
I have made special trips to Racine from across the state just for Kewpee's---that should tell you something.
And while Racine is not a destination spot for most, it has some deep American industrial history, and some of the BEST Frank Lloyd Wright architectural MARVELS! An incredible trip to the area can be made beginning with Kewpee's, the historical society, then a tour of FLW's 1936 S.C. Johnson Administration Headquarters (breakthrough architectural design), their FLW 1944 Research Tower (first tours ever just began), his 1905 Hardy House on Main at 14th St on gorgeous and powerful Lake Michigan, then enjoy a superior, classic supper club dinner at The Hob Nob (separate review pending), which uses the original recipes of many decades ago and hits the ball out of the park! (Only a few miles south of S.C. Johnson Headquarters on Sheridan Road.) But then you might just find yourself staying over so you can hit Kewpee's one more time before departure!

“Old Fashion' Hamburgers, Fries & Root Beer !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

If you are looking for the best old fashioned hamburger place, this is it ! The burgers are juicy and delicious ! Always get the fries and a root beer (no ice, please !) It feels like an old fashion diner, with the "Kewpee" dolls on display taking you down memory lane ! Prices are more than reasonable .... also offer chili which is good, and shakes, of course. just pick out a stool at the counter and enjoy !

“Great cheeseburgers & root beer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2014

One of the best cheeseburger, root beer, fries around!

I always try to make a trip to Kewpee's when I return to my hometown. I find it funny when people call the restaurant "not fancy" etc. What would they have thought of the dingy (but still delicious) place that was essentially surrounded by a parking garage?

For under $15 including tip, you and a friend can get great cheeseburgers, "HOMEMADE" root beers (with a free refill) and fries. You can't beat that.

My daughter, who has only been to Racine twice before, thought it was "unfair" that I went to "that cheeseburger place" without her during my last solo visit. And this is from a girl who lives about 800 miles away!

“Classic Landmark for Racine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

I've been going to this restaurant for my whole life and I consider it a landmark for Racine. The decorating is filled with Kewpee dolls and sports an old fashioned counter with stools and a few tables. Nothing fancy, basic stuff that is clean. Always very busy at peak meal times, you usually have to wait for your food. It seems they do a brisk carry out business too. The staff could be more friendly and respond more quickly to the tables. The most important thing is the great taste of the food. The burgers are outstanding in flavor! Truly amazing chile, fries and of course the root beer.
A very basic and limited menu, that is fresh and Delicious!
