“Nice for the area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2008

Hello all,

My company is located in the Plymouth, WI area, so I stay at the Inn whenever I am in town (5 or 6 times per year). The Inn is old, however nicely restored. The rooms typically have one queen bed and are decorated like you were staying at an aunts house or something. Bathrooms are nice and have jacuzzi tubs in them. Rooms are also very clean. The Inn is located in downtown Plymouth where several restaurants and bars are located within walking distance, however the Inn has awesome food and their bar is also great. Wednesday nights are fun as locals gather at the bar and play Irish music until around 11:00 p.m. This isn't a charge for the entertainment, however it begins to sound the same to me after an hour or so. The Inn does have a continential breakfast each morning that is pretty good. They also have arrangements with a local health club if you want to work out. My only complaint with the facility is the TV's are ancient. They work, but Noah brought them off the Ark.

Thanks for reading!

52 Stafford is the place to stay for a getaway in the Sheboygan area. Both of our stays have been a lot of fun.

As Eagan stated in 2006, it's an historic hotel of fine architecture. As opposed to other places that trumpet an Irish decor that was contrived and minimalist, we enjoyed 52 Stafford. The stained glass and etched glass in the bar is especially impressive; the translucent sticker over one of the windows in our room that looked like aged stained glass was smartly placed.

The main floor does have restaurant seating, the front desk (at the back right) and the bar. You walk right past the restaurant host stand to get to your room just like it isn't an issue - and it isn't. Because of the high ceilings and carpet, noise between the areas wasn't a concern. Folks did smoke at the bar but I wouldn't term the place "smoky" and we weren't affected at all anywhere by it.

Something about the bar makes it a perfect place to relax during a getaway. Maybe it's the beers on draught. Maybe it's the U shape of the bar. Maybe it's the friendliness of the staff. It could be the lack of blaring televisions, as there is only one regular TV in an upper corner for those who can't go without watching the game. It's the kind of place where you might comfortably converse with someone you hadn't met before.

The rooms were beautiful, well sized, clean and complete. There was an iron and board out in the hall and if you need a hair dryer, just call for it. Considering the pricing schedule, two words of advice: double whirlpool. Despite being an in-room coffee service fan, it was completely ignored for the duration of our stays, as it would only delay our arrival at breakfast and bottomless cups of coffee that awaited us there. One mattresses was firmer than the other; test it out for yourself when you get the room.

And about that breakfast - great! We loved the omelets, the french toast with cinnamon and powdered sugar and the side buffet with the cereals, toast, yogurts, juices, coffees and teas, etc.

We haven't inquired about hotel staffing policies on Sunday night, but the restaurant is closed. On Sunday morning, the breakfast is for guests only and they do turn away folks walking in.

The 52 Stafford is an historic hotel built in the late 1890s. It has a minimal Irish theme with some Irish decor in the lobby. There are 19 rooms each with a private bath that are adequately furnished.

The lobby, bar, front desk area and dining area are essentially one large open space on the first floor. Because smoking is allowed in the bar...and the bar is open to the rest of the space, all the public areas are very smokey. If you don't like smoke or are allergic...you'd have a major problem here.

The odd thing about this property is that they "close" on Sunday...but they do take reservations for that night and allow guests to stay. The lights are turned off in the public spaces, there is no one at the desk, and no one answers the phone.

We weren't told of this policy when we booked our Saturday and Sunday night stay during President's weekend. After an afternoon of sightseeing we arrived back at the hotel to find it locked and dark with a Closed sign on the front door. Fortunately we knew our key opened the front door...so we let ourselves in and went up to our rooms. We discovered that the maid had cleaned the room...but didn't leave any towels. Calls to the front desk went unanswered, so we wandered around looking for someone. No luck. We left again for dinner and returned to find it really dark now... and still no one to help with towels. We were simply out of luck.

Monday morning the place was open and staffed again. When we complained about being in a closed hotel with no services, we were told that the reason we didn't know the hotel would be closed was because we booked online. Guests who call for reservations are given this rather important piece of information.

We were able to get a partial refund...but still find it odd that a hotel is "closed" with guests in it. I certainly would not book a stay here on a Sunday night. Otherwise it's a decent hotel at a fair price.
