“Good overall value for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2007

We stayed at the Fox Hills Resort during a business conference. It was overall a nice place. A few issue with the room not being real "up to date" but otherwise, okay. The ladies at the bar/grille were very nice as were the staff. Nice grounds if you are a golfer. Really great/fun restaurant in Manitowoc (very urban and brand new) called The Dugout Bar and Grill-highly recommended!

We stayed in a two bedroom/two bath villa. Bottom line is that unless you are a golf enthusiast, you can do better elsewhere. They should invest some money into facilities and activities.

Pros: (note, the "Cons" negate some of the "Pros")
* Comfortable beds.
* Quiet; didn't hear any sound from unit below us even though they had TV blasting (could hear through their door.)
* Almost pitch black bedroom with curtains drawn, doors closed and night-light off (no annoying sun poking in around the edge of the curtains as is so often the case.)
* Free washer/dryer.
* Carpeted floors in all but bathrooms and kitchen.
* Indoor pool, outdoor pool, wading pool and large hot tub in rec center.
* Large whirlpool in master bath.
* Wireless Internet in rec center and mail hotel building.
* Broasted chicken dinner and appetizer plate was fabulous one night (but see the related "Con".)

Cons:
* Desk clerk gave the distinct impression she had better things to do than checking in guests. (To be fair, only two of the 6 or so staff I interacted with seemed to have this attitude... but not a 5-star experience.)
* Stairwell had west-facing windows and the evening we checked in was at least 100 degrees at the top of the steps (not fun carrying everything up in that!)
* Wiring above stairwell was in stick-on conduit which was coming loose and starting to expose individual power wires.
* Wireless Internet was down about 2/3 of the time (for a day+ at a time) and even though they advertise it as a feature, the response was "since we offer it for free we don't make any guarantees that it will work and are not obligated to fix it when it's down." (Huh? It's not free... not any more than the water and electricity are free.)
* Our last night we ordered the chicken and appetizers again and everything was very overcooked. (Though nothing was charred black, it was all overcooked to the point that the mozzarella sticks were hollow after all the cheese cooked out of them.)
* Dishwasher barely worked and dishes were FILTHY when we checked in. (We're talking caked on food on many items, not just a few water spots... could not have been inspected after last check-out.)
* No DVD player, no PPV, no HBO
* Movie rentals were old, VHS and expensive. (Go to the local grocery store for $99/week videos if you are going to get an old one anyhow.)
* Carpet was old and looked it, floorboards were uneven beneath carpet.
* Fees for almost everything. (What's with the $12 deposit for kids to play on the slides and swings??)
* Washer/dryer on a different floor, was shared by 4 units and took about 90 minutes to wash a small load and 2-3 cycles to dry everything. (Not a big deal but annoying if you wanted to do something besides stay around the villa doing laundry.)
* Family/child activities were lacking compared to all other time-share resorts we've stayed at.
* Only used whirlpool once during entire stay because it took a very long time to fill it to the point you were supposed to before turning it on. Also it was an old tub design that is not very comfortable.

What others have said about 70-80's era facilities is spot-on. Most of the Cons are things that could be remedied pretty easily without a lot of expense or are things they should fix with regular maintenance.

If you can get a villa at a bargain price or love to golf then this may be the place for you. If you're used to quality time-shares and 5-star service you probably want to look elsewhere. Either way, dining in the resort restaurant was 50/50 for us.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2007

We stayed overnight at Fox Hills April 14th, 2007 to check out the property for a possible convention to be held there in 2008. Liz Kosta, Sales Manager, took us on a complete view of this beautiful property: several golf courses, 4 pools, volley ball courts, many outside gathering spots, including a bonfire area, and much more.

While there were children playing and people golfing all over the property, the Villa we stayed in was not only "comfy," it was quiet.

The Villa was large, clean, and had a powerful whirlpool tub in the bath. It was difficult to leave. ..one more day would have been wonderful!

We also looked at the "regular" rooms and while they are not "Villas" they are more than suitable for a nice stay at the Resort.

We also ate at the evening and morning buffetts: plenty of choices at both. The staff was very, very friendly and genuine in their desire to serve us.....I believe that comes from the down to earth attitude of the youth from the small towns in the area of the resort and it was absolutely refreshing.

There is a lot of up- grading going on and I'm anxious to see the fininshed prouct. I will be staying there again in June and expect a very relaxed visit...even if I don't golf.

Though we realize that it was off season and this primarily is a golf resort, we chose this property through our timeshare service with the only goal to relax, and to take our toddler swimming.

We stayed in the villas - in a 2 bedroom. 3 bath with full dining/kitchen and living room w/fireplace. Overall the property was clean, the furnishings and service could use definite UPDATING. No pay-per-view, but you could rent videos... the "newest" video they had was from 3-4 years ago. So, we went into Two Rivers to Movie Gallery and were able to get recent releases (cheaper!) - DVD. They give you a VCR at Fox Hills so if you want to watch DVD's you have to bring your own like we did. Thank God we brought it because at night when we did our laundry, we watched movies while waiting for cycles to finish (see my comments on the laundry machines below...)

Accomodations: The bedrooms and bathrooms were large. The whirlpool baths were the best thing about the accomodations - they were HUGE and the jets were strong. The fireplace was beautiful (all lannonstone), but we had to call the serviceman (who came quickly and who was very nice) to fix the fireplace... the fireplace was the beginning to a list of several things that didn't work. Such as... the dishwasher - we tried running it 2-3 times (and we had rinsed our dishes beforehand)... and it still didn't get our dishes clean, plus it sounded like a jet engine. It was from the late 70's/early 80's and needs to be put out of it's misery. Laundry machines were free (BONUS!)... but the washing machine took over an hour and a half to wash one (small-medium0 load of clothes and the dryer had to be run through 2-3 cycles to dry our clothes completely.

Facilities: You can tell the buildings are old - the decor of the villas was out of the 70's/80's. The bar/restaurants seem to be more with "the times" and the layout/atmosphere of them were nice. The recreation center pool is large and whirlpool was large as well - and it was clean. Also liked that there were changing rooms.

Service: The staff was very very friendly and nice, and quick to serve or answer any question, problem or repair (fireplace) we needed. But... (see below)

Food: Was terrible. Don't waste your time, tastebuds or money. Every order (2x through the bar, once through restaurant) was wrong. We ordered one thing and got another (item-wise!), they cooked our meat opposite of what we requested, and portions were small - I had a seafood special (shrimp/scallops)... I got 3 shrimp and 2 scallops (small/medium size). For the price we paid, I expected better quality seafood or at least more than the quanity I received.

In the area:

Michicot - Nothing. Small town - not much there but Fox Hills. The grocery in Mishicot is very small and very EXPENSIVE (one tomato was 1.75). There is a SuperWalmart in Manitowoc and a Piggly Wiggle and Pick N Save in Two Rivers.

Two Rivers - Home of the 1st Sundae Museum w/fountain / Antiques, a few other museums (Historical Society and Museum of Wood Type).

Manitowoc - Natural Ovens Bakery (Tour, Free Samples and they even had free cookbooks available at the time which made a great souvenir!).

Overall - if I was an AVID golfer, I'd maybe consider going in the summer... but, considering the outdated amenities, decor and terrible food I don't think I would return.

  • Liked — The Whirlpools in the Villas.
  • Disliked — The appliances need replacing and the decor - it's very outdated... by a couple decades.
  • Tips/Secrets — Only good for a golf vacation if you don't mind staying in a time warp from the 70's/80's.

Many items were broken including the dishwasher and washer and dryer. All though the room was very large, it was extremely out of date. Everything was decorated in 1970's fashion. We ordered food several times and the orders were never correct. The staff was rude and unprofessional. They need to update and invest some money into decor and training for staff members. Overall a very dissapointing trip.

My Family and I stayed with friend right after the New Year, and I was very disappointed in the quality, service, and condition of this hotel.

First off the food service was poor at best. EVERY ORDER was wrong. If we order a cheese burger, we got a hamburger. If I ordered a Prime rib rare - it was charcoal! They never got an order right. In addition, stay away from Tuesday Hot Wing - I got food poisoning! Had runs for two days!

Second - Quality The decor was out of the 1980's, maybe early 90's. I expected Flock of Seagulls to start playing at any time! I was here 13 years ago and it wasn't updated since. Not only that, the business center was a single computer with a huge monitor. Se I expect a center to comprise more than a single computer in the lobby running Windows 98. I also expect perhaps a copy machine. Some type of center. To their credit, they did have wireless internet - just not in the condos where we were.

Third the appliances in the condo did not work. The dishwasher was loud and did not clean a single dish. The Washer and Dryer for guests didn't work well either. The Fireplace needed a service guy to come out. The toilets in the condo didn't work well either. All no pay for view! Just a VCR. But the movies on the property are 3 years old. I think Welcome to Mooseport and X-Men 2 was the newest movie for VHS!!!

In short, I am not impressed with Fox Hills. I would stay anywhere else for the money. It’s just not worth it. We are not coming back!!!!

My husband and I stayed at the Fox Hills Resort for a weekend getaway. The weekend special, which included some meals and entertainment, was a great deal which is why we chose to stay there. Our room was clean, well furnished and comfortable. The room had a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker and hair dryer. The resort lived up to our expectations of being a nice place if a bit on the older side. The hotel staff was friendly, and the restaurant had pretty good food - the french toast was tasty. We would stay there again.
