“Solid . . . really solid!”
I ran into a guy at a hotel bar (I know, this sounds like a joke) and we got to talking about "real foodie" restaurants in the Milwaukee area. Well, low-and-behold - his friend happens to own Tess. With an endorsement like that - I had to go.
Let me tell you - this place does not disappoint. The atmosphere is really "midwest" (sorry if that sounds offensive - I mean no disrespect), as it inhabits an old corner bar in a rather nondescript neighborhood. The menu and range of wine/beer and cocktail selections is outstanding - although I would really prefer a better selection of red pours. The food is really unique - with a nice mix of pan-Asian, nuevo-Americana and a smattering of midwest comfort.
I had the pork cutlets. The starch accompaniment was GF gnocchi (wow - nice! A little dry - but very nicely paired with the pork and the mole). Speaking of mole - the sauce was a mole, prepared with a slight Asian flavor palette. The one criticism I have - the heavy handedness that went into garnishing the pork, there was just too much sauce. It actually overwhelmed the flavor of the meat and distracted me from the meal.
I was not, however, distracted to enjoy the meal and overall experience! When I am back in Milwaukee I will go back to Tess.
