“Incredible structure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2007

Quite a fascinating place, both inside and out. Walking around outside of it, and coming upon it walking near the lake, its quite a surprise. Inside, the way the light is tossed around by the glass, the different angles and different materials, its both stunning and very playful.

“Captivating Calatrava”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2006

Awesome. Don't miss it.! A truly awe-inspiring building in a beautiful location -- and a good collection.

Also lunch in the cafe is quite pleasant- views of the lake and a nice salad and beverage selection.

“A delightful experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2006

This is not the largest art museum. It does not have deep collections of old European masters, for example. The collection is stronger in American and modern works.

The best part are exhibits that give meaning rather than just cataloging objects. One compares and contrasts three chairs from different eras and another shows why historical crafts cost more or less, based on materials and workmanship.

The bird-like addition designed by Santiago Calatrava is an impressive work of art in itself, and its sweeping views of Lake Michigan are delightful. In sum, a well-spent afternoon.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2005

It is worth it to stop by this museum to see the "wings" open (or close) and go inside to look at the atrium area. I also went through the Degas exhibit which was quite well done and had a terrific audio tour.
