For Spring Break in March 2007, my spouse and I booked two rooms at the Acanthus, one for us and one for our child and a friend. We decided on the Acanthus because its web page made it look really good. When we were still in Green Bay we had to cancel because there was a big snowstorm that made driving to Milwaukee hazardous and about a foot of snow fell in Milwaukee. Several times we tried to fax our cancellation to the fax number listed on the web page, which said cancellations need to be in writing. Their fax number turned out only to be a phone message and would not take our fax. We also called the Acanthus and cancelled due to the snowstorm. They had charged about $250 for both rooms on our credit card and they refused to refund any amount. They kept the entire $250! A statewide bed and breakfast group tried to help us, but all the Acanthus did was send us a gift certificate with a nonsensical expiration date in April 2008 that had 3 numbers instead of 2 for the day of the month when the certificate would expire! Having our plans derailed by the snowstorm was unfortunate, but having the Acanthus refuse to meet us half-way or with even a partial refund made us feel unwelcome and like we would never want to stay there.
