“Excellent Traditional Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

I like this restaurant because it's nice interesting traditional foods, they encourage to eat the way people normally takes food in African village - as a group. The spice level is just perfect and the combos you can order - lentil, chicken etc are of different taste to suits everyone's taste bud. There are many veggie options too. The inside decoration is homely and nice. Would recommend to everyone to give it a shot. The cost is in range too - spending 15-20 bucks would definitely satisfy you.

“Nice food at excellent prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

This cafe provided very tasty food, in a pleasant atmosphere. The prices are incredibly cheap, but the food is of a great quality. The buffet style meant that you could have as much or as little as you wanted, and we saw people going up for second and third helpings, so it really is terrific value.

“Better if you like sourdough”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013

While at a conference, I heard rave reviews about Alem. Since I hadn't tried Ethiopian food and since it had lots of vegetarian options, I gave it a shot.

The menu offers lots of samplers for newbies. We shared a vegetarian sampler that was served family style on one plate. I'm not actually sure what they typically do if the table orders both meat and veggie dishes since there could be cross contamination. However, there was a sign saying you could get separate plates.

I particularly liked the lentil dish. The main downside was the sourdough pancake used for a utensil. If you passionately dislike sourdough like I do, it's a damper on the meal. I stomached it for as long as I could but eventually broke down and asked for a fork. Fortunately the waitress was obliging.

Overall, Alem was a fun experience and at least worth a try.

“Great food and buffet”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

I have been here numerous times and I am never disappointed. The vegetarian sampler platter is good and plentiful. I usually share it with a friend. On weekdays they have a vegetarian buffet too.

“Delicious homey place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

What a find in downtown Milwaukee! A simple setting for wonderful African food. Everything is on large plates and served with spongy bread to scoop up the food (no silverware!) The staff is willing to explain the choices patiently, and chat you up about what you're eating. I expect to eat bratwurst etc in Milwaukee, so this was a great change. Highly recommended if you're the least bit adventurous.
