“so-so all the way!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2007

Good bed, standard 1990-style furnishings, very musty hallways, very basic breakfast service in a coffee shop that was clearly not one doing a "land office business". The staff were friendly and did not appear to have all that much to do, either, as business was slow. The city had a limited selection of places to stay, and I don't know if there were any better ones, or not.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2007

Best Western in Marinette, WI was considered "home" for me mid. July-mid August 2006 as i was relocating to the area and my new company arranged for me to stay there.

Strengths:
Better than any of the other area hotels/motels, looks like they remodeled in the past few years. The air conditioning worked great during wicked heat wave last summer, staff was nice for the most part, except one of the staff (a "princess"). Rooms have little refrigerators, nice soaps, shampoos and creams and a decent hairdryer.

Weaknesses:
The restaurant is more of a smoking lounge, food seemed mediocre, do NOT eat the 25 cent wings, I've had better shoe leather! Many of the staff members smoke (disgusting habit, but very popular in these parts of the woods, it seems...) and congregate outside the exit door, so be prepared for the plume! In larger cities, a hotel like this would be torn down and replaced with more modern and spacious, but this is a small town and it would be cost prohibitive to attempt that here.

I now live in the general area, so I have no other reason to go there except the restaurant or bar, but there are better places around here to get decent food to eat or get a glass of fine wine...

  • Liked — Clean sheets and towels, a/c worked well, free parking,
  • Disliked — No WIFI in rooms yet, only in lobby/bar, too much smoke in restaurant and near side door where staff smokes
  • Tips/Secrets — Bring your own wine, they served box wine and never heard of Merlot or Pinot! Earplugs are needed when they have kids events.

I found this hotel very suitable for a small town in northern Wisconsin. It was adequately clean, I found the staff quite friendly and had a decent breakfast in the morning. It is nothing special, but I certainly would stay there again should I ever have a need to visit that area.

We chose to stay at this hotel for our wedding (luckily we did not chose to have the reception there!) and were severely disapointed with the entire stay. Not only was our room not ready on time (not ready until 8PM when we were supposed to check in at 2PM!), but when we did get to check in, it wasn't even clean.

The staff was rude every time we encountered them, and upon checking out they even messed up our bill. As we didn't notice this until leaving town, we tried to resolve the matter with the manager, who actually yelled at me over the phone when I tried to correct the mistake.

A word of warning: if you do end up there, don't try the hotel breakfast! It was cold, tasteless, and extremely greasy. Do yourself a favor and head over the bridge to McDonald's. Or better yet, don't stay there at all. You can get much better quality at the local cheaper hotels or bed and breakfasts. A tip: try Menominee, MI hotels, too. It sounds like another state far away, but really it's only across the bridge!
