“Beware of this place”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2008

This was not a good experience. The room is very outdated and dirty. The bathroom is very old and the sink is located in a small space as you open the door. The shower and toliet is located in antoher small room by the door. Ther was no desk or chair in the room. The TV was an ancient model with better ones available from Goodwill. The carpet was dirty. The lamps were rusted and dust had settled thickly on them. But the worst part was the noise. Their resturant had an outside guiter player and singer about 35 feet from the room. The hotel staff said they were not associated with the resturant. Note they are in the same building. The hotel staff said they generlaly tell the patrons of the closest room to the music of potential noise. We were in the thrid room from the noise. The hotel staff claims that they have gone into the rooms to check if the music can be heard in the rooms and it can not. Well I will tell you that I was in the room and it can be heard. The staff was not apologic and simply said the noise could nto be heard. They do not offer any thing to eat in the afternoons or after 10 pm. And on top of all of this it is very overpriced. Take hyour business elsewhere.

Arrived at Hotel, has nice location on the lake. We stayed in Petit Auberge cottage which was $306 for the night.
First impression of staff was friendly but did not offer to help with our bags, or show us where our room was located, I found this disappointing if you are going to charge luxury hotel rates for a night.
Room itself was away from the rest of the main buildings and rooms. Cottage has two separate areas which they rent out, we had the lower level.
Room has a fireplace, small sofa, whirlpool tub and terrace.
Bathroom, toilet and shower were very small, bath tub was large and had view over lake. Sadly bath tub was dirty and had not been cleaned out thoroughly and when tried to run a bath, did not have enough hot water to fill.
Sound proofing is poor and you can hear people easily who are staying above.
Cottage is secluded and would recommend if you want to have privacy, but it in my opinion is not worth the money they charge.
Breakfast was excellent, they have a buffet which had a great selection with some homemade items.
Overall The French Country Inn, I would recommend for great location and views over Lake Como, but if we were looking for a weekend get away from Chicago would look for something offering better quality and value for your money.

I was very ahppy with my stay at this Inn. It was a little expensive, but it was a very enjoyable stay. We had a loft room with a jacuzzi in the upper loft area. I recommend this Inn.

We stayed two nights at this inn. The staff is very nice and helpful. The view of Lake Como is very nice and each room has a balcony. The room we stayed in was quite spacious and the best was comfortable. The Inn is a few miles outside of Lake Geneva so if you are looking to walk into town - forget about it. But, for the price is was quite nice. The only real downside was the bathroom - more Holiday Inn than Four Seasons. But, everything was very clean. No real complaints.

My husband and I stayed at the French Country Inn on Lake Como for our anniversary. We had never been there before but the web site sounded great: secluded European style bed and breakfast. We stayed in their newest, and most expensive, room, the Historic Suite in the main building. No one warned us that the room was above the bar and was not soundproofed. The room was beautiful. Dinner at Kirsch's was great. The problem was the noise. The bar was so lound that we could hear every individual word of the songs sung below. At 11:45, we called the bar and asked when the music would stop. The woman said we were hearing the juke box and that it would likely continue until 2:00. Just before midnight, we could hear what sounded like an entire bar full of drunks singing "Lucille." At midnight, we decided to drive home. We only live an hour away and we decided if we just left, we could get to sleep by 1:00 and sleep in, which was better than any sleep we could get there. When I called the next day to complain, we were told that the person who took our reservation should have explained that the room was over the bar. No one was particularly apologetic and no one offered to refund any portion of the room price. Unless, you're planning to be at the bar until 2:00 a.m., however, I can't imagine why you would ever want that room. I don't know what the other accomodations are like, but be wary of booking the Historic Suite.

  • Liked — The main building and the historic suite were beautifully decorated and the restaurant was great.
  • Disliked — The room was right above a very very loud bar that didn't close until 2:00 am and the room wasn't soundproofed.

We were looking for a last minute getaway and I called LG Chamber of Commerce. Their recommendations were the French Country Inn and the Golden Oaks Mansion.

We called the French Country Inn and they were extremely accommodating and friendly.

The room we chose was on the 2nd floor of their new building. It's directly overseeing the lake, both on the 1st level and also on the 2nd level, where the double whirlpool is set at the window overlooking the water. The setting is beautiful, rooms are clean and well maintained. We did not run into or hear anyone else in our building during our stay, and had no problems cited previously like noisy neighbors or less than perfect pillows or service. We got to watch a beautiful sunset and as the sun went up in the morning, we watched the ice surfers going across the lake in front of us.

Positives: quiet, beautiful location, new and well maintained (at least in the new building we stayed in,) great recommendations for dinner from their manager and a good breakfast with excellent freshly made raspberry scones not to be missed, also romantic and memorable. Their restaurant is also on the water completing the romantic setting.

Negatives: for the price you are expected to pay for the luxury part of this B&B (they have less expensive options, as well--see their website,) I expect the little extras, like bathrobes, magazines/ videos/ or books--had no vcr or dvd player in the room. But even with that, can't wait to stay here again, may be will bring the friends over in the spring or summer. It's probably even more beautiful

  • Liked — The spacious comfort of our room and beautiful views of the lake.
  • Tips/Secrets — If looking for a great experience, spend the extra money on the 2nd floor rooms in the new building--they are 2-leveled with a whirlpool on the second level and are nicer, overall

This Inn has an ongoing plumbing problem that they do NOT take care of. Stayed 8-27-06, we were met with rudeness, arguments, and a complete hassle to get out of out 3 night commitment.....and it was our honeymoon! They need to get different help, and the owner (who was spoken with later), needs to take a less arrogant attitude! Beware.
