We stayed at the Geneva Inn because I had purchased a Groupon reduced rate certificate for $95. We live about 35 miles south of lake Geneva, but have not been there in 15+ years - too touisty for my taste! That opinion changed after our July visit because we stayed at this wonderful hotel!
After entering through the doors held open by a young man, we were immediately checked in by a kind receptionist, and we were in our corner room within 8 minutes. Our room was immaculate, totally smoke-free (woo-hoo!), with a view of Lake Geneva that was spectacular. We truly felt we were on one of our Eurorpean getaways!
It was very obvious the Inn had gone under a refurbishment because everything was new not dilapadated. The room had 2 comfortable double beds, comfortable chair, large flat-screen TV, AND a connected DVD player! My niece had brought her portable DVD 6" player to watch her movies at night but this wasn't necessary due to this wonderful surprise! My favorite part of the room was the large balcony overlooking the patio, dock, and Lake Geneva - a great place to watch the sunset! (It was well worth the $60 Groupon upgrade charge!) Besides the usual soaps, the large bathroom was stocked w/shampoo, conditioner, lotion, mouthwash, shower cap, and q-tips! There was another sink outside the room, as well as a refrigerator, stocked with 2 bottles of FREE water, replenished later that night during turn down service, along with FREE chocolates!
The hotel's hallways were very warm because of the way it is built and the weather during our visit was EXTREMELY hot and humid, over 100 degrees. One of my concerns was that the room would never be cool enough. But, I was wrong! The cold air blew and we slept comfortably all night. Noise from neighbors was not an issue, either.
Shortly after our arrival, we were parked in downtown Lake Geneva and waiting for our boat tour. This hotel is not within walking MY distance of the town, but can be walked along the lake path - about 2-3 miles. The hotel also has a large van parked outside the hotel ready & willing to take guests to the town. There wasn't a need for us to drive and pay the meters to park, but we did!
My only complaint about our trip was the lack of help in finding a nice local place to eat dinner that night. The gentleman that helped us couldn't really suggest a place with fervor, nor did he have the menu for the one we did choose. Perhaps this was more due to the area being touisty - and not known for its culinary skills! We went to Sprechler's and we were disappointed in the food AND service! Our food was brought out in spurts, and they completely forgot to bring out my niece's dinner until we asked our server when it was coming. It finally arrived 10 minutes after our meals and the server said the kitchen "forgot" about it!
The next morning we went down to take part in the free breakfast. Again, I was surprised to see the quality and amount of food offered. There was toast, bagels, deli tray with meats & cheeses, yogurt, cereal, a fruit tray, croissants, & an array of juices. Sitting at tables with white cloth tablecloths and real china - not plastic spoons & forks, along with the breath-taking view overlooking the lake from the large dining room reminded me of being in a small European village! (I thought I saw a sign mentioning that for a nominal charge, additional breakfast items were available, but I didn't see how one took advantage of that offer.)
After breakfast, we went back to town and did some souvenir shopping then back to the hotel to relax until check-out at 11 AM. Checkout was as quick and efficient as our check-in the day before.
While I have stayed in some fabulous hotels across America, Australia, & Europe, this hotel will be one of my favorites. We will definitely be back next year!
Room Tip: The receptionist said that the corner rooms are the largest. Pay extra for the lake view, otherwise...
