I have to say that La Crosse surprised me. It was a great small city with a vibrant downtown district. I loved the little touches like the poetry and dance steps stamped in the concrete sidewalks and the very lovely gardens near the north end of the riverfront park.
The hotel is right on the river in downtown La Crosse. It is within easy walking distance to tons of great restaurants (Piggys is across the street and highly recommended) and bars. It is also at the start of the riverfront walk and park which looks like it goes all over La Crosse in the form of a walking/jogging/biking path. I wish I had a bike or I had packed my skates because it would have been perfect.
The hotel is pretty standard for the Courtyard chain. Comfy beds and a lobby bar and restaurant, but no free breakfast. Free parking. It has an indoor pool with huge glass walls overlooking the lobby and the river.
My issues with the hotel, besides the price, would be the bed pad and the bathroom. The bed pad didn't seem to fit right so it bunched up as you were sitting on the bed. The bathroom was tiny. Really, it was the smallest bathroom I have seen in any hotel outside of Europe. If you are claustrophobic you might have issues when the door is shut.
I would say that it is a little pricy for the quality of the hotel, but it is in a pretty nice location. I would stay here again as long as the price is right.
Good luck and happy travels!
