“More Like a cave than a hotel.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2010

We planned a two night stay at the Best Western. While we normally go to a different hotel, we chose to save some money and try this one. We were nicely upgraded to a two queen room by the front desk. Little did we know what we were in for.

After we managed to pry the door to the main hallway open, we were immediately enveloped with a stale, damp, zoo-like smell. There was an open, out-of-order toilet that reeked as well. We made it to our room and found a continuation of dampness. We sat at the edge of our beds slowly taking in our surroundings. Throughout the daytime we killed a few gnats which we assumed to have just come in from the outside. We thought nothing of this.

Right as we were going to settle into bed, a strange tapping noise started in one corner of the room. We soon found that the ceiling was leaking. It slowed to a stop and we convinced ourselves to just stay through the night. All night the ceiling leaked on and off. The stench of a damp cave became more potent as the night progressed. The beds were box spring, we barely slept at all. We woke up to huge milk bugs crawling on the wall and in the bath tub. When we investigated the leak, we found mold on the walls which looked like it had been there for an extended period of time. The fan light didn't work and the bottom of my socks were dark brown by the end of our stay.

We got up early, got the heck out of there, and checked in to a different hotel. It was like night and day.

Do not stay here... I beg you.

Stayed here during a cross country road trip with the family and the dog... We were looking for a dog friendly place right off the highway to spend the night, but this place was just weird. Our room had an extremely smokey smell and it was old. The walls were thin and you could hear everything in all of the rooms and hallways around you. There is a hotel lounge that attracts an interesting crowd- this crowd sat on a rock outside our window and drank all night. It was not cool. There were also weirdos hanging out in the parking lot all hours of the day. Listen to the the warning of previous posters- make sure you bring all valuables in your hotel room and use all of the locks. The pool was also located in the middle of the hotel and it was not enclosed. Don't get a room next to the pool, or you will be playing marco polo in your dreams.

We stayed in many places during our road trip and this was the first place that we didn't feel comfortable or safe at. Our dog didn't like it here either, she woke us up on numerous occasions throughout the night growling at people roaming the hallway- people roamed the hallway all hours of the night. Our advice- don't stay here. Stay somewhere else.

Stayed here rather than try to drive the last 5 hours home. ( A chance stop, one done cold without checking it out through Trip Advisor first!) You can tell this is a hotel that was down but is coming back up. We met the new manager when we were checking in - he apparently was brought in to get this hotel back in shape. We did not stay off of the central pool area (which certainly looked nice, clean, and orderly), but were down the corridor. We did not have any problems with noise or any other problems while there the one night (and we both conked out about 8pm!). We had a complimentary breakfast in the adjoining restaurant, which was a pleasant start to the day. Overall we were more than satisfied with our stay.

I have never seen a staff so unwilling to assist their guests.

I should have picked up the unwillingness to accommodate us when we first checked in. We called the 800# and the representative my sister spoke to on the phone stated she "locked in" our reservations. Well, when we arrived, the front desk pretty much said that the person on the phone is full of it and has no idea what they were doing. What she supposedly "locked in" wasn't something that they actually offered at this hotel.

All night, being New Year's Eve, there were children running all around the pool area and on the second floor balcony. For some reason, it was only our children that would get stopped by the big, bad security guard, "JB," armed only with his trusty cell phone with the Janesville Police department listed as #1 on his speed dial.

Let's say about 3am, we had an incident with a local guest, that could have ended up with someone being put in the hospital. Thank goodness for good ol' "JB" and his trusty cell phone to save the day (hope u read the sarcasm there). He is SUCH an awesome security guard, that once the situation was resolved, did he manage to step up and play the hard [--] with my husband.

The next morning - I spoke with "Patty." Patty was the weekend manager on duty and basically said, "We made the young man leave, what more would you like us to do?" and left it at that.

SO - how does the saying go? You fool me once, shame on you, you fool me twice, shame on me....WELL, despite what happened the previous night, we decided to stay another.....if the hotel had signs up stating that they have had recent incidents on cars being broken into, I doubt we would have stayed that second night.

Right before check out, we discovered that one of our vehicles had been broken into. The only thing they took was the radar detector. After speaking with the weekend manager, Patty, she stated, "OH, that happened last year!" And then we spoke with Gary, the facilities guy, who said, "NO, that happened 2-3 weeks ago." AND THEN, speaking with the auto glass guy who actually came to tape up our window, "This hotel keeps us in business, this is the third time in the past 2 weeks that I've been out to this hotel for this issue."

AND THEN - during checkout - we discovered that the rate that the first front desk person said we would get was not right either!!! Instead of being $89 a night - they charged us $99 a night! Patty just dismissed us and started checking out another guest.

WOW. I hope you don't get the wool pulled over your eyes when you check out this hotel on the internet! It may get your hopes of being a pretty cool place.......but nothing beats a staff that puts the blame on some one else and refuses to take responsibility for their short comings.

Stayed while visiting friends in Janesville. The room was dirty, there were bugs in the room. I travel with my dog, and the clerk at the front desk would not let me have a king bed room, although that was what my reservation was for, because I had a dog with me. She was rude about it. Although it was a non smoking room, it smelled of smoke. They advertise themselves as the nicest hotel in Janesville, it is very far from it, I would not recommend.

We have stayed at many Best Western Hotels and have always enjoyed our stay. This hotel has dirty hallways, stained, etc. No continental breakfast!!! Very noisy!!!! We had to call the front desk!! Didn't help-----Also upon are arrival we were told by the girl at the counter that we could use our reward points and to tell the person when we check out. But when we went to check out the next morning another young lady told us she couldn't let us do that. We have several thousand points.

Stayed for two weeks on business. Nice bar with occasional entertainment and a fantastic staff. Restaurant has decent food and opens early for breakfast at a decent price. Walls are thin and the A/C units are somewhat old but other than that an average motel.

  • Liked — The bar.
  • Disliked — Wireless internet speed.
