I try to support my local owner/operator and Mia Famiglia is right around the corner from my home. My wife and I were looking for Italian and we realized we had not been to Mia Famiglia in quite awhile and decided to head over for dinner around 7 on a Saturday night.
We were greeted promptly and seated at the bar for a 40 minute or so wait, no problem. After about that 40 minutes we were seated at a table in a back corner, this is a cozy place that seats about 80 - 90 diners. It went steadily down hill from there. We watched as our waiter bustled about the small room as if he hadn't a clue as to what he was doing. He did approach us, ask if our drinks were OK, handed us menus and stumbled through that nights special. He asked if we ad questions or needed anything, we responded "no" and bustled off. It was about at this point I began to remember why we hadn't been back in over a year. I began to notice other diners fidget and look at watches. I heard a couple from the party of 6 next to us excuse themselves from the rest as they need to leave and had no idea that dinner would've taken this long. I got up to go to the men's room and looked into the open kitchen to watch staff throwing things around and looking very glum. As I returned to my seat our waiter was checking in and I asked him "How do you make any money?" He cocked his head and I explained that in a place that seats fewer than 100 and it was looking as though our dinner was going to stretch to 3 hours how did they turn enough tables to make money? He explained that they were short staffed and took our appetizer order as I was beginning to have some serious doubts about a successful dinner. He returned in about 25 minutes with a very bland, very plain sausage and mushroom pizza. All I could taste was the oven, that slight metallic, burned flavor from baking. The sausage was tasteless and the mushrooms even less. By now we had decide to cut our losses and go elsewhere. When he brought the check it include a rude demeanor and no questions about how we enjoyed our too long a time in the dining room. We paid and left. There was no approach from management explaining that it was a difficult evening, no apology, no goodbye or Thank You. It was more of a "don't let the door spank you" attitude.
Milwaukee has so many great places to eat and drink it's a shame that a restaurant like this somehow manages to hang on and give the local operators a bad name.
