“Amazing Little Restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2014

We would never have suspected that, hiding behind a very bizarre facade, we'd find such an incredible eatery !

We stopped here on a whim because I like non-franchise dining establishments and someone mentioned White Dog while we were dining at another cafe on Broadway Street this week. So we made a firm plan to check it out.

What a fascinating little venue. Half of it is a pub and the other half a dining room. Thus the White Dog - Black Cat designations. The decor is fabulous. They feature the work of local artists every week and have some of their own eclectic creations on the walls.

I love the beat up sofas and the wood burning stove on one side of the room, where you can await a table if it's busy. Five of us were seated immediately.

The wine selection is good, and most selections are about $6 per glass. You can also choose raspberry tea, coffee served in a see-through glass cup, beer, etc.

But the food menu is most impressive. They offer very unusual items like hummus pizza, which comes with spinach, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Or the Black Cat sandwich, which is a healthier version of a BLT, with bacon, provolone cheese, spinach and tomato on a dark rye bread.

Everyone in our party selected something different. The black bean burger was fabulous, as was the French onion soup and the wild mushroom brie soup.

Every day there's a special, and today's was a 6 ounce tenderloin steak with potato wedges for $8. That's right - EIGHT dollars. My brother said he didn't expect much for that price, but he decided to chance it anyway. His meal turned out to be absolutely delicious.

Our server was wonderful. She answered all our questions and was thoroughly efficient handling our orders (without writing anything down). She refilled the coffees several times without having to be asked and ensured that everyone in our party had everything we required.

Every one of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal, and we were all pleased at the prices. I will definitely make it a point to eat here every time I'm in town.

“Bar food dressed up”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2014

The menu is pretty basic and the home made chips have been consistently uncrispy. Aside from that it's fair, the items my wife and I ordered were nothing to write home about but were as advertised. I don't get hype.

“Very eclectic little cafe...food so so”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2014

Went to this cafe strictly on reviews on various sites about the yumminess of the food. In the Broadway District on the West side of the Fox River, looks pretty funky from the outside. Inside furnished with lots of mismatched furniture and cool artwork. One side is the restaurant, and other is the Bar.

Ate on a Saturday near 1 so they still had some breakfast things on the menu.

While the atmosphere was very cool, the food was not remarkable. Had the portebello sandwhich and it was not very tasty, too much bun, very drippy, just not the best. One diner had the Greek Salad, it was mostly lettuce, not alot of other additives besides the meat, and last person had the french toast...it was ok, but the side of bacon did not taste good, almost spoiled tasting.

I don't think I would return.

“Funky it is!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2014

We found this funky bistro via Trip Advisor. When this many reviews say funky, I'm probably going to love it.

My friend had the Fantastic Muffaletta. I enjoyed a teeny cup of chili with three pieces of buttered Italian bread. Good and inexpensive, but teeny. My husband had the Swampburger and he liked it very much- it was described to us as an explosion of flavors and it was- delicious. Great secret sauce! The atmosphere was thrift shop cool and we had a great time visiting and people watching. We would go back after 5 - the flat iron steak was a special on Saturday nights.
