“Perfect for a large family gathering!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

We reserved the farmhouse for a family holiday gathering just after Christmas in 2013 for four days. There was room for 10 of us - which is hard to find at such a great price - and even extra guests for dinner. At times we had up to 15 people socializing in the various rooms of the farmhouse and never once felt cramped. Plenty of room near the cozy stone fire place, or if you prefer try warming your hands at the sweet wood stove around the corner in the additional family room with a view of the surrounding property, which is lovely in the Winter snow. The dining room is extra large, with a nice long table to seat everyone at. The game room was a hit with its old fashioned shuffle board game, electronic dart board and card table. Young and old alike spent time in that room!

A morning walk out back through sparkling snow to the creek(s) nearby was just the ticket for a good start to the day. While the property itself is really pretty, be aware that it is in fact at the intersection of two somewhat busy roads. The town itself is extremely small, but apparently situated on some well-traveled roads. The noise was not bothersome however and we all slept well.

I think what I like about this house is that it feels well lived in, so you are comfortable using the furniture and cooking utensils without worrying about damaging a brand-new item. If you are used to five-star accommodations and room service, then a farm house rental is probably not what you are looking for. Expect something that fits like a nicely broken in pair of jeans and you will have the right idea. There are lots of thoughtful touches throughout the house, and it is very homey.

The master suite on the main floor has a large jacuzzi tub/shower and a large and comfortable bed with walk-in closet. The game room has a futon which is as comfy as a futon gets (not too bad) and the upstairs is nicely appointed with several bedrooms, small seating areas, and a large comfy bathroom.

Bob and Martha were very nice, stayed out of our hair, and brought firewood for the fireplace which was much appreciated. Don't forget to buy some apples at the old general store two doors down and feed the mules when you go on a walk! We enjoyed bowling at the Spartan Bowl in Stoughton nearby, and a Sleigh ride in MacFarland too. All in all, this was a perfect spot for our family that ranges from 17 to 70, and we will surely be back again!

Room Tip: The game room can be a little cold for sleeping but there are lots of blankets.

We weren't treated very nicely . They walked in the home while we were in bed. Door was locked. The house is cold. Price went up 50% during our time. Policy changed when we got there and were charged for a night we didn't use the extra room. Very disappointed. Had planned on returning every year.

Complaints regarding Cooksville Farmhouse Inn, Christmas Eve, 2013
Entry of owners unannounced - On the day of arrival the guest phoned at about 9:30 p.m. to say that the TV in the master bedroom was not working. TV with DVD in the fireplace room was okay. “Should we come right over?" we wanted to know. “No ,if you come in the morning it will be fine. If we are out come on in. We don't mind.” was her reply. In the morning about 9:30 a.m. we knocked on the door. We are early risers and wanted to solve the problem, but also wanted to give the guests a chance to sleep in. No answer. Knocked again. I know that my door knocker carries well throughout the house. Waited. Still no answer. We supposed the guests were out somewhere for breakfast as they said they might be. So we entered the hallway. A voice from the bedroom several rooms away said “Don’t come in. We are still in pajamas” “Okay, when would be a good time? We have an appointment at 10:30.” She said we should come after we got back from that. So we returned in early afternoon. The master bedroom TV indeed seemed to be broken. We replaced it with a new one, hooked up the antennae and VCR , wished all the guests a Merry Christmas and left.

Cold house –The guests arrived at noon (3 hours prior to check in time) and wished to be checked in. It was a cold day, near zero with strong winds. I was clearing ice from sidewalk (we had had an ice storm during the night) and I was preparing to start a fire in the fireplace. In winter I always start a good fire a couple of hours before guests arrive. We set the whole house forced air furnace temperature at about 68 degrees, remembering that guests like to stay warm by the fire. We also have a Vermont soapstone wood stove which, along with the fire place, I offer to keep going for guests. We always supply dry oak firewood on the back porch at no charge. Guests have never run out. The main heating unit, the furnace for the old farmhouse, is new and works well . We show guests how to operate it. They can set the temperature to any comfortable degree they like. I admit the 150 year old farmhouse is not well insulated so that there can be cool rooms depending on temperature and wind direction. Remember the fireplace and wood stove work very well for cozy heat and there are plenty of blankets in case they are needed in the trunks and closets.

Overcharge - guest says the charges were excessive. They had booked for 3 nights for two rooms (we have a three night minimum for Christmas ) They cancelled the third night, but we charged only for two because we understand emergencies come up and we value their business. This guest seemed upset because we charged for two rooms for two nights rather than the one room they used for one night and two the other. Our policy clearly states that we charge for the maximum number of rooms used even though they might not be used every night of the stay. (Cleaning and laundry work is still about the same even if every room used is not used every day.) I would like to note that the charge to the guests was for two days rather than three as our policy states so that they in fact got a good financial break.

We are very sorry to have disappointed these valued guests who have used our place in the past and always leave it in clean orderly. We are thankful to them for this opportunity to apologize and explain and promote our property and good service to all who might read this.
I hope that these guests will stay with us again next Christmas. But this might be an opportunity for the many of you who have tried for this holiday but found it booked, to stay with us in a wonderful season in a wonderful setting.

We were looking for a cozy place to stay and celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary/second honeymoon. We wanted privacy, a fireplace, and a kitchen, as well as outdoor space to enjoy the snow. Cooksville Farmhouse had all this and more! It is absolutely perfect and Bob and Martha are lovely people and great hosts and provided everything we needed including fresh eggs! Our stay was romantic and cozy and felt like the perfect way to relax after the busy holidays and celebrate our special occasion. We will definitely come back and stay again without waiting for a special occasion.:) We especially enjoyed taking snowy walks in the wooded trails behind the farm and learning about the history of the area. We also had fun exploring the antique shops in Stoughton and a visit to Madison to go ice skating at Tenney Park Lagoon. We also spent an afternoon snowshoeing at nearby Kegonsa State Park -- beautiful trails for x-country skiing also. We'll have to visit again for sure! Such a lovely comfortable farmhouse, beautifully decorated with art and antiques and plenty of books, games, and firewood for cozy evenings. We felt like we were at home here right away and couldn't have found a better place or more unique area with top-notch hosts! Thanks so much for everything!
P.S. We will definitely tell our family and friends about our wonderful stay here! The rooms upstairs are very inviting and it would be fun to come back with a group next time..:)

What a delight to host these folks for their special celebration. There is nothing more satisfying in the hospitality business than to see people enjoy your place. We sure hope these people come back and bring their friends.

Seven of us were able to enjoy a weekend full of scrapbooking and socializing. We had plenty of room to set up our tables and supplies and still had space to relax and enjoy the fireplace and woodstove. The house and property are beautiful and the owners did a wonderful job making us feel welcomed! Even though it is an old house, there were plenty of electrical outlets, good lighting, and an open layout that worked well for our group. With all of our scrapbooking materials we were thankful that we didn't have to bring along bedding and towels. It was so wonderful to have all the conveniences of home! We're hoping to invite a few more gals and return again soon!!!

It was great to see these folks making good use of the house in a way we hadn't seen before. I never knew scrapbooking required so many supplies. The common areas of the house are big enough that they could really spread out. They moved furniture out of their way and made the space work for them. They also very kindly put everything back in place at the end of the weekend and did a fantastic job cleaning up. It was our pleasure to host them.

Our extended family spent a great (but very hot!) weekend in June at the Cooksville Farmhouse Inn. We received a pre-trip email letting us know the air conditioning would be on for our arrival, and that was much appreciated. The setting is simply wonderful, with beautiful views across the prairie. We all enjoyed walking through the prairie and around the farm and around tiny Cooksville. The house has been very comfortably finished, and we cooked several large meals and had all the equipment we needed. There is a swing set and a seating area around a fire pit, where we had a campfire one evening, as well as patio seating to enjoy the view. Indoors, the game room has a dartboard, card table and shuffleboard table, which the twentysomethings in our family especially enjoyed. There is a television, but we never bothered to turn it on.

The Inn receives five stars from me for its wonderful, welcoming owners, its beautiful setting and rustic charm. It was also nice to be only twenty minutes from Madison while feeling many miles away. Please note, though, that the Inn is a farmhouse, so those expecting Ritz-Carlton bedding and amenities will be disappointed. This is a fantastic place for a large family gathering, and we hope to return before too long.

Room Tip: Be sure to take a walk through the prairie.

My husband I spent a much needed relaxing weekend in April at the farmhouse. Even though it is so conveniently located close to both Madison and Chicago it really gives you a feeling of being far away from the daily grind.

The open and bright farmhouse, the scenery around and the hosts made the visit incredibly relaxing, leaving us wanting to stay much longer. The weather cooperated and allowed for some nice biking.
Martha and Bob have thought of everything from games, books, etc., so, coming with a larger group would be a lot of fun too. They are very hospitable and gave us delicious eggs freshly laid by their free range chickens.

Room Tip: This is really a vacation rental where one is charged by the number of people in the party and the n...

My Mom & 4 sisters spent a week at the Cooksville Farmhouse during the summer of 2011. It just reminded us so much of spending summer vacations at Grandma's farmhouse when we were kids. The early morning farm sounds, the walks through the farm meadows, the lay-out of the house and the farm provided many opportunities to relax and unwind and to reminiscence about earlier days. We enjoyed our daily walks about the quiet and quaint town. It was almost like staying at Grandma's...except we had all the modern conveniences of 2011...AC, dishwasher, cable, etc. We'd love to come back for another visit.
