I can't say enough good things about Door County. My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary there last August, and we had a great time. We stayed in the village of Ephraim, which is centrally located in Door County. I found some of the other villages (especially Fish Creek) to be kind of "tourist-y". Ephraim on the other hand was quiet, and nice. I highly recommend the Eagle Harbor Inn, which is actually a really nice bed and breakfast. We decided to get the smallest room with a private bath to save some money, so we were a little worried about what we would get. In fact, our room was very nicely decorated, and looked like it had been remodeled recently. Our bathroom had a skylight, which I thought was a nice touch. The breakfast was great. It seemed appropriate for both couples and families.
We went to the Post Office Restaurant for their Friday night Fish Boil. It's a 3 minute walk from the B&B. I thought they put on a nice show, and the food was good and filling.
The next morning, we drove to Peninsula State Park, rented a tandem bike, and biked along the Sunset Path. My husband and I haven't biked for years, and I was 6 months pregnant at the time, but we had a blast. The path goes through forested area, alongside a beach, and next to at least one lighthouse. It took us a couple of hours because we took frequent breaks. It was good cheap fun (we spent about $15 total to rent the bike).
We went to Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant for lunch. I heard that it could get crowded, but we must have come in after the lunch rush. The best thing about this restaurant is how unique the food is. They've got typical food, sandwiches and stuff, but it's their Swedish menu that makes this place special. I've never had anything so different and exotic. There were beets, and herring, and sour cream, and eggs. I can't say I loved Swedish food, but it was definitely worth trying, and I'd go back again. The restaurant is best known for having goats on the roof, and that was fun too.
One of the last things we did was go on a Sunset Concert Cruise. I thought this was a great way to end our weekend. It's very low key and relaxing. There's a buffet dinner served on the ship, with turkey, mashed potatoes, and other dishes. I don't remember the name of the band that played, but they weren't bad. The best part was when a man (the owner?) took out his flute and started to play. The views on the lake were gorgeous. If you go, be sure to bring warm clothes.
My husband thinks this is the best vacation we've been on. I think there's a lot to do in Door County, and I'm looking forward to going again.
