“Great jungle adventure.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

I want to begin my review by explaining something about Costa Rica. We have lived here for fourteen years. We have read 100+ of reviews by tourists good and bad. I want to say that Villa Lapas is in the rain forest, in the jungle. When you have "expectations" you will run into trouble. We knew for one- there are always bugs. Ants are abundant, so what! If we expect that the rooms will be fesh smelling as the Sheraton in your home state forget it! It is humid and hot. Our room was very clean and large with good lighting. The air worked very well and the shower was hot. The grounds of the hotel were wonderful. There are a lot of workers always cleaning, raking, etc. Our breakfast was great. We had the Tico breakfast each morning. The setting is by a river-perfect! The Skywalk tour was one of our best we have been on in Costa Rica. The five suspension bridges are impressive. My wife and I made it in two hours. It isn't easy but it can be done! The only problem was a small leak in the roof with refuse sifting down onto our bed. The iguanas play on the roof and sediment "lightly" rains down. Another problem which is not the hotel's problem- our neighbor turned on their TV at anbout 1:30 AM and it was on the rest of the morning- loud!

Room Tip: Rooms 141- 150- in front of reception.

We stayed here for 3 nights and had a great time. Rooms were very comfortable and the food great. There was lots of wildlife in the gardens, Macaws, armadillo, ant eater, monkeys, toads and various other birds.

Room Tip: all the rooms are quiet

It is all about expectations. A guide had told us before we arrived at Villa Laos that the place is very run down. It is true that the rooms are run down but we were prepared that it is not a five star hotel.

The Cristal filtered water jug at the walkway looked like it had been refilled with tap water. Water on he toilet was brown. Hot water was a slow dribble. The lunch and dinner buffets were mediocre at best and were overpriced. Breakfast is so so and doesn't have much healthy varieties. If you stay here, be sure not to take the full board option.

However, the hotel ground is very beautiful. My husband is a bird photographer and it was very convenient that we can go for a bird walk before breakfast. It is close to the Parque Nacional Carara and it is very convenient to go back to the hotel to take a rest during the hot hours. The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. There is no WiFi in the room, but it is quite strong at the restaurant and swimming pool areas. The hotel has a river and there are many birds playing around the trees by the river, which is just a joy to watch.

All things considered, if we were to come back to this area, we would still stay at this hotel.

The accommodation is in chalets set in a large garden, with a small river running through. This was a good place for an early morning bird walk, with lots of species passing through the valley.
The rooms were fairly basic, but had good air-con (Jaco is hot!).
Food was decent, but not the best we had in Costa Rica. The restaurant is out door (under cover).
Service was good, and the laundry came back well done and on time.
Recognise that this is a fairly basic set up and you'll have a good stay - don't expect luxury, or you'll be disappointed

Room Tip: all the rooms are in chalets, and they all seemd similar, so far as we could tell.

If you are into the flora and fauna of Costa Rica, this is a great place to stay. Beautiful grounds with a small river alongside. The accommodations were clean, roomy and the AC was a definite plus in the hot, humid climate. The food was fresh and tasty. If you are looking for a 5-star resort, this isn't it. It's very low-key, but comfortable. I recommend it highly.

Quiet, reserved and very local in appearance. We were here for an afternoon, to do zip line in the surrounding forest. The two young fellows who ran the zip line were great. Helpful, attentive, fun. I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure. My husband especially like that he was the only male with six lovely ladies from the ship on tour with us.
Can't say much about the hotel, other than the staff seemed quite nice and spoke perfect English.

Room Tip: can book zip line and transportation, right in town where the ship docks. Don't bother with exp...

We stayed here for three days in March. The rooms are reasonably sized with very good air con, bathrooms are a good size with a large shower and lots of hot water. Comfortable beds and very clean, the laundry service was quick and efficient. Food was perfectly acceptable but as a beer drinker I was disapointed , we were on an all inclusive basis and the beer was provided by the glass. The beer was in large screw top bottles which is alright if you get the first one out of a new bottle but was flat if some had already been poured.I refused one glass when I saw it made up from the dregs of three bottles.
The surroundings are beautiful with views to the forest and over the river. A very nice place to stay if you like rustic surroundings and don't drink beer.
