My wife and I are in Door County every fall around our anniversary and we typically hit up the same establishments. This time we decided to check out something new...Wickman House. We were there on Thursday October 11, our first night in Door County. My wife really doesn't like seafood at all but she gave in to my wishes because it was Crabfest Night!
They didn't take reservations for 2 so we just decided to show up at around 7:30. We were seated immediately and given the choice of a table near the fire or bar, we chose the last seat near the cozy fireplace. The host that seated us (and every other gentleman working) was dressed in white button-up shirts and bow ties, which was a classy touch. The main dining area was most likely the main living room of the old, very large farmhouse. The fire was going and the environment was comfortable and inviting. The service was very good the entire night. We decided not to start off with an appetizer since i had the full intention of gorging myself on crab! I had a fantastic Coney Island beer, which the waiter informed me was chosen by one of the owners in an effort to bring a touch of New York to the Door County farm after working in NY. My wife had a nice glass of wine. Since the Crabfest is intended for 2 (or even 3) people i asked if i could get a single portion. They were more than happy to accommodate a half portion (half price) for just myself. My wife got the french dip with au jus and a side of french fries. The Crabfest lived up to my expectations and my wife had no complaints on the french dip! I was delivered a tin tray loaded with crab legs, mussels, corn, potatoes, melted butter, and sriracha tartar sauce. The steamed crab and mussels were fantastic - i completely cleaned those up and ran out of space for potatoes and corn! My wife said the french dip was among the best she has had! It wasn't the local fast food shaved roast beef type meat. It was freshly sliced, pink in the middle roast beef.
We really wanted to try the chocolate cake based on other reviews, but neither of us had the space to accommodate dessert. It was an overall great experience - great service, great atmosphere, great food. A new staple to our Door County dining.
