“Dated Decor, Peaceful Setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

I spent two nights at the Ashbrooke this past weekend. The hotel itself is rather dated, with maroon and hunter green carpeting, silk flowers, wicker furniture. It reminded me of something decorated in the 1980's. However, the facility was very quiet and peaceful - no children running around slamming doors at all hours of the night. The pool/sauna/hot tub area was beautiful and rarely used by anyone. While the decorating leaves much to be desired, I certainly would recommend this facility due to the peaceful atmosphere (rare) and pool area.

My husband and I have stayed at the Ashbrook for the 4 time this past weekend. Again, it is a consistantly clean and quiet place to stay for adults! Egg Harbor is more low key than Fish Creek, but plenty to do! We will continue to stay here when ever we go to Door County!

It was our first time to Door County, and as I usually do, I used TA for guidance. I found the reviews spot on. Egg Harbor is centrally located so it served as a great hub and The Ashbrooke was a nice quite place to stay. Adults only, room was spacious, everything worked, staff was friendly, grounds were well mainained.

Room Tip: Ice & vending are on lower floor and there is no elevator.

The hotel was meticulously clean. Landscaping was lovely. Our room was nice and quiet. The gas fireplace was very pretty. The location was great. The coffee and muffins were delicious. I'd go back again!

We stayed there for three days this week along with another couple. Nice, clean facility which is quiet and well located. When a problem arose, it was referred to the owner immediately. He personally handled the situation promptly and in a friendly and considerate manner. Problems can arise anywhere. How they are resolved speaks volumes about the management of any facility. This could not have been a more satisfactory outcome!

The Ashbrooke is an attractive building surrounded with beautiful landscaping and it is well maintained. I rated it average because of issues with the building and with management.
First, the in wall heater / air conditioner is extremely noisy. It would constantly turn on and off, making it impossible to sleep. I finally turned it off and opened the window. But because of noise from the traffic on the busy highway in front of the building, that wasn't a good option. In addition, the building has little or no sound proofing. From the adjacent rooms we could hear televisions, hair dryers, toilets flushing, running water, electric shavers and peoples' conversations. If noise disturbs you, be prepared for a long, sleepless night.
The Ashbrooke does not have an elevator. For young people that is not problem but for a 76 year old, carrying luggage up and down stairs is not fun. Plus, there are no vending machines or ice machines on the second floor. A trip up and down the stairs is required to get a snack, go to the pool or exercise room, and of course, to leave the building.
The maid service was only fair. Dirty glasses were left on the counter and I noticed cob webs on the window sills.
I agree with previous comments about grumpy staff. I don't think they like their jobs and it shows.
The Ashbrooke also has an antiquated cancellation policy. Most hotels now have a 24 or 48 hour cancellation policy. The Ashbrooke requires 14 days. If you depart early, you will still be charged for the balance of your reservation - regardless of reason. I suspect management's attitude reflects the fact that the hotel is located in a high traffic, tourist area and they need not be concerned about repeat customers. I will not return.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the first floor at the back of the building where traffic noise is not so loud.

Dear Paul R. from Madison -

I am truly sorry that you did not have a great experience with us during your recent stay. I certainly can understand that it can be annoying when things like an air conditioner makes undue noise in a room and other mistakes were made. I just wish that you would have brought this to our attention during your stay. We are typically very quick with responses to problems and work diligently to do whatever we can to make our guests as comfortable as possible. I am sorry that we did not succeed with you.

You are correct, we do not have an elevator within our hotel. We do, however, make every effort to inform our guests of this fact on our website, on our online reservation page, or on the phone should the reservation be made with a member of our staff. I apologize if this information was not made clear enough to you before you made your reservation online. I will review this issue to see if improvements can be made.

The Ashbrooke does have a 14 day cancellation policy, which is very common across the country in destination resort areas like Door County. As a small independent property, we guarantee the specific room type and dates of your reservation request. Last-minute cancellations and early departures can leave our hotel with emply rooms that we simply can not refill. We appreciate our guests understanding of this policy, and will certainly do our best to assist them should an unforeseen emergency force a change in their plans. This policy is in no way a reflection of our feelings toward a repeat customer. We are very proud of the fact that over 70% of our guests have stayed with us before, many of them several times per year. I am sorry that we will not have another chance to meet your expectations.

Sincerely,
Fred Anderson

Excellent all adult hotel. Quiet, well appointed. Only problem is the fireplace would not lite. So what it's still summer. Free selection of DVD movies. Easy walk to numerous restaurants, shops and the harbor. Pricey but very nice suite.
