“Not an RV Park. Better suited for tent camping.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

Rustic Barn campground is more suited for tent campers than RV’s. The owner is bit of a wise guy and is a master at giving you as little as possible for your money.

While advertising that his pull through sites are 80’ long what he doesn’t tell you is that they are SO narrow you can’t fully extend an awning. He staggers campers to allow a little more room, but when it gets crowded it's really tight.

Next thing he doesn’t tell you is that there is no sewer hookup. When asked about it he advises that “good water management doesn’t need it”. Well, good campground management would provide it. To offset the lack of sewer he offers a “honey wagon” service for $8, but only on two specified days. There is one public dump and as might be expected it gets crowded as people are checking out. After waiting in line you find out that the only water supply at the dump is a little squirter. There’s no hose hook up to allow you to flush your holding tank.

To insure you use only HIS firewood, if you want a fire ring you have to ask for it. WiFi did not work for us, but seemed to be available. Possibly just over crowded, but there weren't a lot of people there so I don't know. Not having a sewer hookup I was forced to use his showers. Large and well lit, but dirty with hair accumulation in the corners.

I planned on staying four days but checked out after two. With the exception of electricity Walmart offers just as much without charging you.

We 'stumbled' on this campground on our way from Iowa to Ohio. It was just across the Mississippi River into Wisconsin and not too far off the highway. The campground is on an elevated piece of old farm-land that has a lovingly-restored old barn as the focal point. There are views in all directions of the rolling hills and fields. Although rules state dogs must be leashed; we found a field that was part of the property (away from all the campsites) and asked permission to have our "Abby" off-leash so she could do some retrieving. This was the best part of her visit!

The barn is now used as the office and rec-area for the park. There is also an old chapel on the premises where one can go for a few quiet moments of meditation. The campsites are wide, and level with plenty of grass between them. Some sites also have concrete pads. All have picnic tables. We enjoyed being able to have a fire each evening, and it was a good 'excuse' to get to meet all our 'neighbors' from near-by sites. Everyone is so friendly! The owners are on-site caretakers who seem to be passionate about insuring that everyone is enjoying themselves.

Thanks for a most enjoyable stay... We would definitely go out of our way to return to the Rustic Barn Campground!

Although this facility caters largely to RV's, we found tent camping here to be quite comfortable. Bathroom & shower facilities are very clean & well cared for. The grass is comfortable and the territorial view is soothing. On site laundry & very small store are amenities along with a large game/relaxation room in the barn.
