“Romantic Retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2005

My husband and I stayed at Canoe Bay two weekend nights and loved it. The seclusion of this place cannot be denied. We felt as if we were in the middle of nowhere (we were!) and hardly heard any noises beside the occassional golf cart delivering food to our doorstep. The entire weekend felt so private. When something is delivered to the cottage, a simple knock indicates it is there and the personnel delivering it disappear. We loved that! The lake was chilly in August but warming up on the sunny dock was heaven. The lake is small (as a previous review mentioned) but definitely gave us enough space to explore. Same with the trails.

We found the staff to be very friendly, the food great and the accomodations nice. The cottage is perhaps the one place I would suggest improvement, although we did not stay in the most expensive. It was certainly adequate, just not luxurious.

Canoe Bay is the kind of place to go to when you want to spend some serious down time. It is a place to sit on your deck drinking coffee and talking, listening to/watching music/movies (checked out at reception) or napping! It is _not_ a place to go if you want an action-packed weekend with multiple activities to keep you busy. The slow pace is a huge part of the appeal.

We will return!

It is truly lovely -- the architecture, the rooms, the grounds, the native plantings. This is a wonderful example of some of the best of American style, i.e., the Frank Lloyd Wright inspired architecture, the Alice Waters inspired food. My husband and I were there in late August and appreciated the peace and quiet, the beauty and the excellent food with its emphasis on fresh, local sources. I didn't see any cabins or rooms other than our own. However, I would think that all are very comfortable based on ours. We were in Lakeside Cabin 11, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it. If you appreciate peace and quiet, good food, good service and lovely surroundings, then you can't go wrong here!

To be honest, Canoe Bay did not live up to all our expectations. Maybe they were a bit too high because I had read such favorable reviews. The room was nice, not great. Nothing that I can pinpoint, just I've been in rooms that were much more comfortable. The location is good and bad. Good, because you are indeed isolated and it's very peaceful. A true retreat. Bad, if you'd like to grab a bit to eat in a town...because there's nothing around this area. We had dinner there every night and it was the biggest disappointment. We've stayed at other Relais and Chateaux properties and the food has always been the highlight. Not here. It was average, and in a few cases, actually tasted old and stale (desserts, specifically). It's a fixed price meal so you don't have option of eating light. Property does expect you to eat light for breakfast. They deliver small basket of pastries and coffee to door of your cabin. The delivery is great, but I really like to have more well rounded breakfast (like eggs!). That was not an option. Also, the same items were delivered each morning. Yes, they were good but some variety would have been nice. Hotel had a great library with tons of good books and magazines. Absolutely loved this part of stay. I'm not positive if we would return. Not enough bad to say we wouldn't, but there's not a big draw to make us return.

This is what a couple's getaway is all about. From the room, to the service, to the quiet setting, to the great gormet food....it was all great. It is a place to totally get away from the world, relax, and enjoy each other. I really would recommend it for just the tow of you, not even a place to go to with another couple. The delivery of your breakfast so you can sit on the deck and enjoy the scenery and deer starts the day just right. We had great massages outside on our deck, took walks in the woods, took a great canoe ride, and just relaxed. It's not cheap....but totally worth it.

My husband and I spent three nights here for our honeymoon. We found our room to be lovely but a little over priced. We stayed at other places on our honeymoon which cost less but were more spacious. We stayed in the Heavenly Suite which had the best views of the lake and included an extremely comfortable king sized bed, jacuzzi for two, two headed shower, living room area with wet bar, two fireplaces and a deck overlooking the lake. Our favorite part of our stay was our room.

The food was all right. We had two dinners and enjoyed one more than the other. The serving sizes were not as large as we expected. Breakfast was satisfactory. We enjoyed the baked goods and fruit more than the entrees. We ordered a cheese tray our second day which was good (we shared crackers with a friendly chipmunk on our deck, which was fun). We ordered lunch on the third day and enjoyed this more than any other meal. The chicken pot pie was delicious and perfectly flakey.

We hiked the trails and found them to be rather short. In an hour we had gone through the bulk of them. There was ample time to canoe but not much lake to canoe on. The lake was much smaller than expected and full of weeds...and it was definitely not as pristine as advertised since you could not even see the bottom in many parts. We swam once in the lake but that was enough for me. The lake is also not private, as advertised. There is one man who owns land on the opposite side and who parks a camper near the edge of the forest. We could not see the camper from our room but are sure that some of the resort cottages have a nice view of it.

The peace and tranquility of Canoe Bay cannot be denied. The property is very secluded and you will not hear anything but the wind whistling through the trees and birds singing. We loved this aspect of our stay but believe we have seen even better scenery in other parts of the state. We expected more hiking trails and a better quality lake to swim in and canoe on. For some people Canoe Bay is a perfect retreat. We personally left wanting more out of an outdoor orientated resort.

Canoe Bay was the perfect retreat.

You are checked in by the most courteous staff, who explains a detailed map of the property. Another staff member then greets you at your room/cottage to help you with your bags and orient you to the room, which is sumptuously furnished with comfy leather furniture, incredible bed, and fireplace. You dress for dinner, which is a formal affair in the dining room for couples only, overlooking the lake, and have one of the finest meals ever (and we've lived in NYC and Boston), with impeccable presentation and service, and prepared using organic and locally grown foods. After a peaceful and romantic night, you are awakened at the time of your choosing by a knock on the door announcing your breakfast has arrived. This you enjoy on your private deck overlooking the lake, wrapped in one of their luxurious robes. You put on one of the CD's they have supplied as you dress and head out for a morning of hiking the trails (we preferred them for a run only, no leisurely stroll, due to the August mosquitoes, which were a problem only in the woods), kayaking, canoeing, or swimming off the dock. Your picnic lunch or cheese plate arrives at your room, and you enjoy it at one of the many scattered picnic locations along the lake. Next, peruse the thoughtfully and expansively stocked library, or continue your morning activities. Then prepare for another evening feast! Needless to say, we had a fabulous time - exemplary service, accommodations, and food. No phones. Brief encounters with the other guests, who were all friendly, laid back, and enjoying themselves. Just the restorative experience and time to reconnect that we needed. And, as a lesbian couple, the only flak we received was the indiscreet whisper of a fellow guest at dinner, whom the staff automatically served dinner to in a very rapid-fire succession as they slowed our service, so that we quickly regained a most comfortable and pleasant dining experience.
Also, dinner is a set menu for everyone - there are not choices, which was actually really fun, waiting to see what the evening would bring. I dislike fish and seafood, however, and the chef accommodated this even at the last minute, preparing fabulous gourmet dishes just for me. If you have such restrictions, let them know in advance if you can.

We highly recommend Canoe Bay for a peaceful yet playful couples retreat. For us, it was definitely worth the expense. We're hoping to return in fall and in the winter to enjoy the place in different seasons.
