“Inn with a View”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

We have stayed several times at this fantastic B & B high on a bluff with the very steep entrance (there is another one). The owners are most cordiial and the breakfast fantastic (with a chocolate course!) as is the dining room itself. The house has a metal deck which overlooks the confluence of 2 rivers as well as a 7 mile view. The carriage house is just a few steps from the house, but feels cozy and somewhat isolated. This is the place to stay if you are coming from the southwest Chicago suburbs on your way home or just coming to Burlington.

We chose this place at the last minute, as we were looking for a clean, nice, B&B in southern Wisconsin. We drove from Racine to Burlington based on the reviews on tripadvisor and we were positively impressed. We stayed in the Avondale room in the main house. Gayle&Mike, the owners, live on the premises, and they are very friendly. The place is really beautiful - great view from the 2nd floor balcony that is open to everyone. We enjoyed the "late 4th of July fireworks- they weren't fired as it was too try on 4th of July" in Burlington. The grounds have a nice walking area to the street and to the river. Breakfast is a feast - lovely. Our room has the bathtub in the room - old style. Everything was exceptional (lots of chocolate provided and cold water). There are some games and handheld TVs for those wanting some entertainment. Otherwise just enjoy the beautiful scenery and the relaxing atmosphere. It felt like a lot of good energy over here. Thanks Gayle&Mike - we'll be back!

This was my first bed and breakfast excursion so I don't have much to compare it to, but this place was everything I would have wanted in a bed and breakfast and my wife loved it.

Mike and Gayle were awesome and attentive, you can tell they take their job seriously. The place looks well kept up, with lots of flowers and a cool looking porch. I stayed in the avondale which is cheaper but has the bathtub in the room a la 1908 style. One downside is that the walls are paper thin but hey I guess back in 1908 they didn't have much in the way of sound insulation. Breakfast was excellent and filling. Slept well. I'll prob try a new place next time I'm in town to see what is out there but I'm not sure I'll find a better spot. It's also about 25min away from Lake Geneva, which I thought was cool since you have a nice drive through farmland back to the bed and breakfast.

Yep, it's everything you could want. We stayed in the Avondale, which is the room in the house with the bathrub in the room, but that wasn't a problem because the porches were such comfortable places to wait for the significant other. Gayle and Mike were wonderful and the breakfasts were super! Lovely surrounding, good food, pleasant host, what more could one want.

For over a decade, my wife and I return to The Hillcrest Inn as our little refuge. Nestled among beautiful trees and gardens atop an ideal hill, with a stunning view, The Hillcrest Inn is perfectly managed by Mike and Gayle, whom we have come to consider good friends over the years. They each welcome you with such great charm and warmth; you are made to feel immediately at home, and you feel like a member of their extended family.

The rooms are spectacularly decorated, in a quaint, soft, and "antique" manner, giving great coziness to any season of the year. Privacy is achieved whether in the main house or in the Carriage House.

And the "pièce de résistance" is Gayle's full, three-course breakfast each morning, expertly prepared with the deftness of a great chef and the love of a mom - chocolate is always included! Mike is the ultimate host, serving coffee, telling stories, and chatting with the guests at any moment.

If you need a moment away, choose the tranquil paradise that is The Hillcrest Inn. We have been journeying there for 10 years, and hope to do so for decades more!

We have been staying at the Hillcrest Inn with Mike and Gayle for the past 4 yrs now. Burlington was my hometown. I moved away 30 yrs ago, so this is now my home when in town visiting friends and family. (Yes we have family we could stay with, but actually prefer the hospitality and accomodations at the Hillcrest better!)

We couldn't ask for a better place to call home! Not only is the Inn inviting and relaxing, but our hosts feel like family. The breakfasts, always served with chocolate - are delicious, filling and incredible every time! We have stayed in each of the main house rooms now, and also the Pembrook in the carriage house. All the rooms have been wonderfully decorated and we've gotten a great nights sleep in each. Coffee in the morning on the upper porch when warm outside is a nice way to wake up! Also from there looking out over the river in the evenings is most enjoyable. The grounds also have beautiful flower gardens.

We've stayed in quite a few BnB's and this one is still our favorite! We look forward to our 2011 stay and seeing Mike and Gayle again.

Room Tip: Weekday rates are best. All rooms are wonderful!

We choose The Hillcrest Inn for a special celebration and were not disappointed. It sits high on a hill, surrounded by many trees. We enjoyed the privacy of our suite in the Carriage House, which included a relaxing whirlpool for two and a gas fireplace. A separate sitting room had a DVD player, small dining table and coffee maker. Mike and Gayle are gracious hosts and made our stay very comfortable. The ample and delicious breakfasts were served beautifully; each ended with a special chocolate dessert. Although it was too cold to sit on the second story patio, the view was beautiful. In the warmer months, the patio will be a relaxing place to sit and enjoy the outdoors. Entering the property from Route 11, (instead of the Storle Ave. entrance), the house and carriage house come into view as you go up the curving driveway, welcoming you to a peaceful getaway.
