This was our first stay at Stout's, but have heard many good things about this island lodge. We stayed here the first weekend in October, which just happened to be a very cold weekend in the 30s and 40s after the previous weekend's 80 degree days.
Our room was great with beautiful views of the lake with lots of sun shining in. However, we had some questions about our room, and aside from the gentleman who showed us the room, and no room phone for a place without a front desk, it was unclear who we should direct our questions to (steam shower stopped working, and we could not figure out how to get the fireplace to turn on). We ended up living with these things as they were, and did not inquire about their operation.
We had dinner on our first night at the lodge, with a cocktail before dinner. The bartender seemed very busy and preoccupied, though it was unclear at the time he was acting as the host and the bartender for both the dining room and the lounge. The bar was out of New Glarus for the weekend. The dining room was full, but emptied out soon after we sat down for out 7:15 reservation. It was eventually filled back up with a loud party, who happened to require a lot of attention. The service in the dining room was fine, albeit, somewhat clunky particularly for the prices that are being charged ($25-$30 entree). The food was fantastic, though coupled with the service and quantity, was off-base.
I think as a whole, this is a great place to go and I will recommend it to friends, but with a handful of caveats.
