“A Quiet Retreat”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2014

This was our first stay at Stout's, but have heard many good things about this island lodge. We stayed here the first weekend in October, which just happened to be a very cold weekend in the 30s and 40s after the previous weekend's 80 degree days.

Our room was great with beautiful views of the lake with lots of sun shining in. However, we had some questions about our room, and aside from the gentleman who showed us the room, and no room phone for a place without a front desk, it was unclear who we should direct our questions to (steam shower stopped working, and we could not figure out how to get the fireplace to turn on). We ended up living with these things as they were, and did not inquire about their operation.

We had dinner on our first night at the lodge, with a cocktail before dinner. The bartender seemed very busy and preoccupied, though it was unclear at the time he was acting as the host and the bartender for both the dining room and the lounge. The bar was out of New Glarus for the weekend. The dining room was full, but emptied out soon after we sat down for out 7:15 reservation. It was eventually filled back up with a loud party, who happened to require a lot of attention. The service in the dining room was fine, albeit, somewhat clunky particularly for the prices that are being charged ($25-$30 entree). The food was fantastic, though coupled with the service and quantity, was off-base.

I think as a whole, this is a great place to go and I will recommend it to friends, but with a handful of caveats.

Thank you for the fantastic time! The lodging was beautiful and peaceful, the food delicious, and the party very fun! My grandkids danced until they fell asleep! Stout's has provided our family with many wonderful memories.

We have stayed on the Island of Happy Days many times! It is the perfect getaway for couples, friends or families! It's like stepping into a whole different world. It almost feels like you are in another country. Imagine a spring weekend in Ireland! :) Spring, summer or fall the island is perfect for any season! The staff are so helpful and friendly and the food is exceptional! We have also hosted events here and I can assure you it is a perfect place for a surprise party, family gathering or corporate retreat! I would highly recommend Stout's Island Lodge to anyone. A must visit for all!

We stayed on Stouts over MEA and had a picture perfect weekend! We fished, kayaked, hiked, read, played Monopoly and ran around the big yard with flashlights in the dark. My kids loved it and can't wait to go back. Wilson 1 was perfect - clean and comfy, the right amount of room and a great view. This was my second time at Stouts - which is filled with all the charm you'd expect of a 100 year old resort. Highly recommend!

The Island Of Happy Days is a respite of perfect serenity hidden in the middle of northern Wisconsin. I hope that it doesn't catch on too much so I can still go there. One of the best ways to spend a weekend with someone special. My wife and I were able to get away and fully recharge from many long weeks and months of working incredibly hard in our own businesses. Something spiritual!

Room Tip: Shorewood Lodge is the best place on the island! Best views, etc.

We just finished a long weekend in late October at the lodge. Weather was cool and breezy with losts od sun our last day. The staff is friendly and helpful. We loved Lodge 5 room because it was rustic with a wood burning fireplace. This was our first time at the lodge and we have booked for a long weekend in June when the wonderful gardens will be in full bloom!

The only disappointment was the dining. I am sure they cut down staff because of the reduced number of guests. Only one waiter who did everything: take orders, deliver food, bus tables, tend the bar int he Great Room, and tend to the fireplaces (two). The food was mixed quality. The soups were great. The burgers were reheated and dry. We had a very bad experience with an uncooked chicken entree. I suspect the chef was gone for the season and the kitchen was run by inexperienced staff. It's really too bad when everything else was so great.

Room Tip: Every room is different. Check out the pictures on the website.

We had a great time during our visit to Stout's Island Lodge. The pick up on shore was right on schedule and check in was a breeze. We stayed in two rooms while we were there, Wilson 1 and Alison 1. Both were very nice but Alison 1 is really a gem. Great views. Cozy. Spacious for two adults and two kids. The grounds were lovely, with nice walking baths and beautiful views at every point. The water equipment at our disposal was perfect. Overall the resort is quaint and lovely. We would definitely go back again.

My only issue was the service in the dining room. Our first evening there, the dining room was full and there was only one waiter servicing the entire room. On top of that, he was the bartender too! Service was beyond slow. Guests were getting up and refilling their own water. Clearly not his fault. He was doing his best. It would be impossible for anybody to man that room alone. We woke up the next morning to find a similar situation for breakfast. One server and a full room. There is definitely a staffing issue. While they were all friendly and courteous, there is only so much each person can do alone.
